Sanchez and Donohoue lead the way as Concordia tops York College, 5-1

The Concordia University women’s soccer team cruised to a 5-1 win over York College in the 2010 season opener on Saturday afternoon in Seward.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the third minute of the game.  Jordan Donohoue scored off a crossing pass from Carolyn Chrzan to put Concordia on top.  York College tied the game at 1-1 in the 18th minute on a goal by Adiana Loya. 

Concordia took control of the game from there with three more goals in the first half.  Jamie Sanchez put home her first goal of the day off a corner kick to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead.  Hannah Denk was credited with the assist.  Less than two minutes later, Mallorie Blanck scored to increase the Concordia lead to 3-1.  Donohoue and Sanchez picked up the assists on the goal.  Sanchez scored her second goal of the game in the 31st minute to give the Bulldogs a 4-1 cushion.  Donohoue was credited with her second assist of the game. 

Kaela Geyer scored the fifth goal of the game for Concordia in the 59th minute.  Sanchez and Kelly Ross picked up assists on the final goal of the game.

Head Coach Lisa White was impressed with the effort of her team.  “We took a big stride today in terms of playing within our system,” commented White.  “We were more creative today with our forwards, and it was a great team win for us today.”    
 
Concordia held a commanding 31-2 advantage in shots on the day.  Sanchez finished with two goals and two assists, while Donohoue scored one goal and had two assists in the win.  Ariel Harris picked up the win in goal for the Bulldogs.

“It was great to get the season started the right way,” said junior forward Jamie Sanchez.  “We played as a team and communicated well.  We just need to continue improving on our competitive standard as the season progresses.”  

Jordan Veness made 10 saves for York College in a losing effort. 

Concordia travels to McPherson College on September 1.
