James shoots career low; Bulldogs sit fifth after day one of Concordia Invite

LINCOLN, Neb. – A marathon first day of the Concordia Bulldog Spring Invite (April 7-8) saw the field of 65 golfers complete 36 holes amidst chilly and windy conditions at Highlands Golf Course in Lincoln, Neb. With two of three rounds in the books, Concordia University, Nebraska Women’s Golf is situated in fifth place out of 11 groupings. Individually, senior Emery Custer and freshman Olivia James are holding onto top 10 spots heading into the final round. James carded a career low 18-hole score in Tuesday’s second round.

Head Coach Brett Muller’s squad shot a team score of 338-335–673 while navigating the home course. The field of Bulldogs numbers nine strong.

A Kearney High School product, James improved by eight strokes from round one to round two as she carded a score of 86-78–164 (+20). Her previous low had been an 81 at the Bethel College Invite in March. James and Custer (85-79–164) sit even heading into Wednesday’s round. Custer will be aiming for her sixth top 10 tournament finish of the season. Both James and Custer are 10 strokes behind tournament leader Kamryn Zuniga (79-75–154) of Morningside.

The rest of the Concordia varsity grouping at the tournament includes seniors Maddie Lewis (83-84–167; 14th), freshman Amelia Ptacnik (84-96–180; T-38th) and sophomore Makenzie Hughes (87-94–181; T-40th). Lewis is coming off a fourth-place claim at the Bethel Invite and is only three strokes off Custer and James atop the team leaderboard. Complete Bulldog scores are listed below.

The top four on Concordia Invite team leaderboard are Morningside (632), Doane (653), Iowa Western Community College (654) and College of Saint Mary (671). The Bulldogs stand in front of GPAC rivals Hastings (684), Briar Cliff (686), Northwestern (707), Mount Marty (725) and Midland (805).
