Loss in GPAC tournament ends 2006 season

The Concordia Bulldogs had three players reach double figures but it wasn’t enough as the 23rd-ranked Doane College Tigers stopped the Bulldogs in four games (-25, -21, 29-31, -27) in the GPAC Tournament quarterfinals on Saturday night in Crete, Neb.

It was the fourth meeting of the two teams this season. Doane (26-7) got the better of Concordia three times. Shack” Invite on Sept. 9, in five games.

The Tigers, the third seed, advance to the semifinals of the GPAC tournament and will face second-seeded Northwestern. For the second straight year Concordia (20-14) finishes the season with 20 wins.

The Bulldogs didn’t go quietly on Saturday. Down two games to none, but Bulldogs rallied in game three, coming from behind to get the win 31-29. After leading for a good portion of game four, Concordia dropped the deciding game, 30-27.

While neither team hit the ball extremely well, Doane out hit the Bulldogs by almost fifty points, .163 to .119, and had 10 more kills, 66-56. The Tigers also out dug the Bulldogs, 112-92.

For Doane, Kari Hochstein had a match-high 24 kills and hit .259 while Allison Weaver had 18 kills and 22 digs.

Senior outside hitter Natalie Koopman-Meyers led the Bulldogs attack, recording 16 kills. Koopman-Meyers added 20 digs to complete the double double. Fellow senior Jaelle Rodenbeck finished with 27 digs and nine kills.

In the middle for Concordia junior Katie Werner tallied 12 kills on 36 attempts (.250 hitting percentage) and had six blocks at the net. Freshman Kelli Ziegler was one dig away from her third triple double of the year finishing with 31 set assists, 11 kills and nine digs. She also had three block assists.

Four earn 2006 All-GPAC honors, Werner named first-team

The Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) has released the 2006 allconference volleyball selections. Four different Bulldogs have been honored: one first-team, two second-team and one honorable mention.

Middle blocker Katie Werner (Syracuse, Neb.) garnered first-team accolades, outside hitter Natalie Koopman-Meyers (Scribner, Neb.) and setter Kelli Ziegler (Lincoln, Neb.) were named to the second-team and honorable mention honors went to outside hitter Jaelle Rodenbeck (Fort Wayne, Ind.)

Werner, a junior, currently ranks second in the GPAC in hitting percentage at .360. She was third in the conference in kills per game with 3.9. She led the GPAC in overall blocks with 164 (80 solo, 104 assist) and is second in blocks per game with 1.67.

Koopman-Meyers, a senior, finished the season with 381 kills and ranks 12th in the GPAC in kills per game with 3.34 per game. She also added 439 digs, second best on the team.

Ziegler, a freshman, shared the setting duties in Concordia’s 6-2 system. She finished with 713 assists (6.54 per game), 10th best in the GPAC. She was also dangerous from the service line, netting 64 aces, the most in the conference.

Rodenbeck, a senior and second-team selection last season, led the Bulldogs in digs with 477.

Concordia finished the season 20-14 overall. It marks the second consecutive season of 20 wins or more for the Bulldogs.
