Peru State takes down Concordia, 3-1

Peru State College picked up a 3-1 volleyball win over Concordia University on Wednesday evening in Seward.  It was the first game of the season for both teams.  Scores of the match were 31-29, 25-20, 25-27 and 25-18.

Concordia had several opportunities to win the first set.  The Bulldogs led for much of the set, but the visiting Bobcats rallied for the win.  Peru State carried momentum into the second set and led from start to finish to take a 2-0 lead. Much like the first two sets, set number three was close throughout.  Neither team led by more than four.  With the score tied at 25-25, Concordia’s Alex Szalawiga and Marlee Denton slammed back-to-back kills to secure the 27-25 win for the Bulldogs.

Peru State controlled play in the fourth and final game.  The Bobcats jumped out to a 14-8 lead early and cruised to the 25-18 win.

Chelsea Vaudt had a match-high 15 kills to lead the way for Concordia offensively.  Amanda Kisker added nine kills, while Szalawiga totaled eight kills and 12 digs.  Alexa Hopping handed out 23 set assists, and Kaylie Mellema added 17 for the Bulldogs.

Peru State was led by Carly Morehead’s 10 kills and 10 digs.  Maddy Lister added nine kills, while Emily Maresh had 14 digs to pace the Bobcats.
