Bulldogs win a pair in final day of Labor Day Classic

The Concordia University volleyball team picked up two more wins at the Labor Day Classic Tournament on Saturday.  Concordia defeated York College in four games and rallied to defeat Tabor College in five games.  The Bulldogs finished with a record of 3-1 in the two-day tournament and now sit at 7-3 on the year.

Scores in the win over York College were 25-23, 18-25, 25-16 and 25-20.  The Bulldogs used a balanced offensive attack to secure the win.  Amanda Kisker had a team-high 10 kills for Concordia.  Chelsea Vaudt and Alex Szalawiga each pounded nine kills, and Szalawiga also added 12 digs in the match.  Sloan Brandon had eight kills and 12 digs, while Ashlea Vaudt chipped in with eight kills.  Alexa Hopping had 24 set assist in the Bulldog win. 

Hilary Mekelburg had a match-high 15 kills, and Erin Davidson handed out 28 set assists for York College. 

The Bulldogs needed to rally late to pick up an exciting win over Tabor College.  Scores of the match were 12-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-19 and 16-14. 

Szalawiga had a double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs in the win for Concordia.  Brandon, Ashlea Vaudt and Chelsea Vaudt all had nine kills in the match.  Brandon also added a team-best 12 digs.  Hopping had 27 set assists, while Kaylie Mellema handed out 21 assists in the five-set victory. 

Tina Frick had a match-high 20 kills, and Mandi Phillips had 29 set assists for Tabor College. 

Concordia hosts Morningside College on September 7.  The junior varsity match is scheduled for 6 pm with the varsity match to follow at 7:30 at the Health, Human Performance and Athletic Center.
