VALLEY CENTER, Kan. – Head coach Joel Helmer’s trap and skeet program made its 2016-17 debut over the weekend at the Park City Shocker Fall Classic, hosted by Wichita State University at the Ark Valley Gun Club, Sept. 10-11. Fifteen Bulldogs took aim during the two-day event that tested shooters in three categories: trap, skeet and sporting.

Concordia got its best performance on the men’s side from freshman Wyatt Pursell, the team’s high overall with a score of 269. Pursell, who earned a spot on the U.S. National Junior Team, led the Bulldogs in both skeet (96) and sporting (87). On the women’s side, sophomore Erin Lokke posted a total of 265, shooting 93 in skeet, 92 in trap and 80 in sporting – all best among her female teammates. Lokke also took part in the optional bunker/Olympic trap competition and connected on 57 of 75 targets, placing her second among female competitors.

Seven of the 15 Bulldog shooters got their first taste of collegiate competition at the Shocker Fall Classic. Said Helmer, “It was a learning experience. I was really proud of the way the team handled themselves and how they competed.” Helmer also made mention of freshmen Katarina Borg and Riley Meyer, both placed second best among Concordia shooters in regards to their respective genders (full results at bottom).

Concordia trap and skeet is in its third season of existence. This year’s roster includes 20 members in addition to new graduate assistant coach Dustin Renfro, a graduate of Texas A&M University.

The Bulldogs return to action Saturday and Sunday at the Fort Hays State Shoot in Hays, Kan.
