GRAND ISLAND, Neb. – For the second year in a row, Concordia University, Nebraska Shooting Sports landed in fourth at the Prairie Circuit Conference Championships. At the 2026 conference shoot held at Heartland Public Shooting Park in Grand Island, Neb., the Bulldogs busted 2,654 targets towards the team high overall (HOA) leaderboard in a competition that simulated the national championships. Each athlete took aim at 600 total targets across the disciplines of skeet, skeet doubles, sporting, super sporting, trap and trap doubles. The competition played out over three days (Sept. 25-27).
Head Coach Dylan Owens’ Bulldogs were led individually once again by graduate student Katie Welker-Luetje. She won the HOA women’s conference championship and was recognized as an all-conference athlete.
“Overall, I think the team is showing the potential that we have,” Owens said. “We just have to keep pushing a little bit more and more as we look forward to nationals in March. That's some of our best skeet shooting in a few years … It felt like every team except Midland kind of struggled. William Penn and Fort Hays struggled, but kudos to Midland. They shot really, really well this weekend and had some really good scores.”
The Hamill, S.D., native Welker-Luetje continues to star in her fifth season at Concordia. At the conference championships, she turned in scores of 96 in trap, 93 in doubles trap, 98 in skeet, 90 in skeet doubles, 83 in sporting and 84 in super sporting for an HOA total of 544. That performance put her just outside of the overall top 10 in the field of nearly 140 men’s and women’s competitors. Additionally, Welker-Luetje came away as the conference women’s runner up in doubles trap.
By discipline, Welker-Luetje shared the team lead in both trap (96) and skeet (98) with junior Clayton Gellerman and with grad student Devin Harris in doubles trap (98). Meanwhile, Harris emerged as the top Dawg in sporting (84) and skeet doubles (93) and Gellerman led the way in super sporting (88). Welker-Luetje was followed on the team HOA leaderboard by Harris (535), Gellerman (528), sophomore Jerry Kaibel (513) and senior Jaggar Luetje (481). Eleven of the 19 Bulldogs produced totals above 450.
As noted by Owens, Concordia athletes combined for eight personal bests across the six disciplines. Owens made mention of sophomore Cody Carlson shooting 97 in skeet for a second week in a row while also lauding Jaggar Luetje for his 80 in sporting clays. Additionally, Lane Schoff shot 94 in skeet and freshman Grace Douglas cracked 82 targets in sporting clays. Five Concordia competitors hit at least 94 targets in skeet, including sophomore Delayna Rife. The team’s six through 10 shooters from an HOA perspective were sophomore Brianna Helsene (476), Rife (472), senior Colby Gaines (468), Carlson (465) and Schoff (456).
As a team, the Bulldogs shot scores of 473 in trap, 442 in doubles trap, 482 in skeet, 448 in skeet doubles, 405 in sporting and 404 in super sporting. In the HOA team standings, Concordia placed behind Midland University (2,820), William Penn University (2,795) and Fort Hays State University (2,783). The Bulldogs defeated the likes of Wartburg College (2,565), Hastings College (2,559) and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (2,558).
Added Owens, “We finished fourth in skeet, fourth in doubles skeet and fifth in super. Even though those aren't necessarily our best finishes, it was really nice that in both super sporting and sporting clays, we stayed in the 400s out of 500 as a team. We've struggled with that in the past, so it was really cool to have that consistency.”
Welker-Luetje joins the list of previous program conference HOA champions that includes Wyatt Hambly in 2021 and Erin Lokke in 2020. Lokke powered the 2020-21 Bulldogs to a team HOA conference championship, guided by the late Scott Moniot (the program’s head coach from 2018 through 2022).
Only two events remain on the fall semester schedule. Up next, the Bulldogs will be headed back to Grand Island for the Hastings Bronco Invite on Oct. 3-4. A few weeks later, Concordia will wrap up the fall slate at the Southeast Community College Invitational (Oct. 24-25).
