SEWARD, Neb. – A setback in doubles proved to be a blip on Thursday (Oct. 1) as Concordia University, Nebraska Men’s Tennis wrapped up its fall schedule with a dominant victory. The Bulldogs took five of six matches in singles play while vanquishing rival Midland, 5-2, on a crisp early fall day in Seward. In its first and only dual of the fall semester, Concordia debuted a lineup led at the No. 1 spot by senior Daniel Caballeros.
Head Coach Lisa Hart’s squad will carry a 1-0 record into the spring semester. The 2026-27 team is just beginning to define itself. The fall slate has featured a GPAC individual and ITA regional tournaments.
“I’m proud of how our guys responded after losing the doubles point today,” Hart said. “We have a lot of talent and potential. We need to continue to work on translating that to the court on a consistent basis.”
The Warriors gained the upper hand while triumphing at the Nos. 1 and 3 doubles spots. The team point came down to No. 3, where the Bulldog duo of Leo Lopez and Juan Luzuriaga was clipped in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (8-6). The one Concordia win in doubles was delivered at No. 2 by the combo of Davi Costa and Diego Villafane.
While roaring back in singles, the Bulldogs earned victories at the Nos. 1 through 5 spots. It was tight at the top as Caballeros and the sophomore Costa managed to persevere in tiebreakers. Concordia showcased its depth, winning handily at the 3, 4 and 5 positions, which were held down by Ben Chisholm, Lopez and Luzuriaga, respectively. Collectively, they dropped only three games. It was a positive result for Hart’s program, which graduated top-of-the-lineup standouts Hugo Fuentes and Nick Velders from last season’s team.
It was also Midland’s first dual match of the fall. The Warriors finished last season at 2-3 in GPAC matches (6-14 overall). Back in the spring, the Bulldogs blanked Midland, 7-0, on the way to a school record 17 wins during the 2025-26 season.
Thursday’s match marked the end of the fall season for the Bulldogs. The bulk of the 2026-27 campaign will take place during the spring semester. The complete schedule will be announced soon and will be available to the public HERE.
