Concordia competes in the GPAC Fall Tourney

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Bulldogs competed in the GPAC Individual Tennis Tournament over the weekend (Sept. 12-13). Concordia University, Nebraska Men’s Tennis was at Woods Tennis Center as Nick Velders led the Seward roster in the fall playoff.

In flight one, Hugo Fuentes and Nick Velders defeated Diego Infante and Mats Vervloet (Doane), 6-1, but surrendered a walkover in the following round. Ben Chisholm and Santiago Abadia bested Andre Hartman and Jaime Asiain (6-0) before falling in the quarterfinals (5-7).

Joseph Melzer and Ognjen Gajic in flight two, defeated Nick McGill and Aidan Jespersen (Doane) in a 6-0 shutout, plus Chris Wailes and Ruben Sanchez (Morningside) in a tiebreak set, 7-6 (7-5).

In singles flight one, Velders earned his way to the championship before falling in the third-set tiebreakers (6-2, 4-6, 7-10) to Morningside’s Mathys Arnold. Fuentes totaled his two sets only giving up four games (6-1, 6-3) to Angel Bustos (Midland). Fuentes lost to the champion (Arnold) in the quarterfinals.

Chisholm in flight two, made it to the semifinals by defeating Hartman (6-3, 6-2) and Santiago Minetti (Morningside), 6-4, 6-3. Abadia almost blanked Midland’s Marcin Gniadzik (6-1, 6-0) and fell in a tiebreak to flight two champion Jesse Gerth (Morningside), 6-3, 4-6, 6-10.

Newcomer Gajic in flight three, took Adams (6-1, 6-2) and fell in the quarterfinals. Bedrosian defeated Ignacio Gomez (Mount Marty), 6-3, 6-0, but dropped his quarterfinal match in a third set tiebreak.

In flight four, Krumm outlasted Gavin Watterson (Hastings) with a third-set tiebreak (6-1, 2-6, 11-9). In flight five, Firminhac defeated Dorian Rico-Yanez (Morningside), 8-7 (7-4).

Melzer, Ethan Phinney and Gavin Martens competed in Lincoln in singles. Phinney and Ben Firminhac plus Michael Bedrosian and Mitch Krumm were on the courts in doubles.

Concordia will make its way to the ITA NAIA Central-West Regional Championships and the Kansas Wesleyan University Invitational on Sept. 26-28 in Salina, Kan.
