Bulldogs record second-straight win

NORTH NEWTON, Kan. – For the second time in nine days, the Concordia University men’s tennis team has claimed victory. On Saturday (Feb. 29), the Bulldogs followed up a 7-0 win over Sterling College (Kan.) by toppling Bethel College, 5-2, in North Newton, Kan. Concordia won four of six singles matches and two of the three doubles contests.

Second-year head coach David DeSimone’s squad has now evened up its overall record at 2-2. The season opened up with losses to William Jewell College (Mo.) and Grand View University (Iowa).

The Bulldogs experienced the most success in the bottom half of the lineup. In doubles action, they picked up victories from the combos of sophomore Jack Kitson and freshman Eduardo Rojas at No. 2 (7-5) and sophomores Joe Bindl and Isaac Howes at No. 3 (6-1). Concordia went up 1-0 after doubles.

It clinched the team triumph over the Threshers with the aid of singles wins by junior Jeremy Berryman at No. 2 (6-1, 2-6, 6-4), Howes at No. 4 (6-2, 6-1), Kitson at No. 5 (6-0, 6-0) and senior Josh Miller at No. 6 (6-0, 7-6). Meanwhile, Bethel got the upper hand at Nos. 1 and 3 singles and at No. 1 doubles.

Action will continue next Friday (March 6) when the Bulldogs will welcome Baker University (Kan.) to the Fieldhouse for a 2 p.m. CT matchup. The two sides met in Baldwin City, Kan., last season with the result being a 5-4 win for the Wildcats, a member of the Heart of America Athletic Conference.
