Bulldogs compete in the GPAC Fall Tourney

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Bulldogs competed in the GPAC Individual Tennis Tournament over the weekend (Sept. 11-12). Concordia University, Nebraska Men’s Tennis took the courts at Woods Tennis Center with transfer Juan Luzuriaga leading the Seward roster in the fall playoff.

"Extremely impressed with how we competed in every bracket this past weekend," Head Coach Lisa Hart said. "We showed tremendous competitive spirit and played the big points extremely well. We are looking forward to the ITA Championships in a couple of weeks."

In flight three singles, Luzuriaga went 4-0, taking out two Midland Warriors in the last two rounds to claim the title. The Seward CCC transfer defeated Angel Bustos (6-1, 6-2) and Stan Trappeniers (6-2, 6-1). The Ecuadorian paired with Leo Lopez went undefeated (4-0) in doubles two bracket to take the final. The pair defeated Concordia’s Mitch Krumm and Viggo Tolstrup (6-0) in the semifinals and Colin Crecelius (Morningside) and Tomas Lazaro Requena (6-3) in the finals.

Freshman Tolstrup won singles flight four with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Krumm of Concordia. Both won two matches before reaching the championship.

In bracket five, Ben Firminhac made the final after two wins against Tre Red Bear (Hastings), 6-1, 6-3, and Miller Hatterman (Midland), 6-2, 6-2. Firminac dropped the draw title.

Diego Villafane posted a record of 2-1 in the second singles draw with wins over Lazaro Requena (6-3, 6-2) and Seabo Saleshando (Morningside), 6-4, 6-2.

Daniel Caballeros, Davi Pereira Costa, Ben Chisholm, Joseph Melzer, Ognjen Gajic, and Ethan Phinney also competed in Lincoln.

Concordia will travel back to Salina, Kan., to for the ITA NAIA Central-West Regional Championships from Sept. 25-27. The Bulldogs will compete at Salina High School for the chance to make ITA Nationals held in Rome, Ga., on Oct. 15-18.
