Baker, Mount Marty make up weekend slate

SEWARD, Neb. – After a break in the action, Concordia University Men’s Tennis is ready to return to action with two matches in a three-day span. The Bulldogs will be in Lawrence, Kan., today (April 8) for a matchup with Baker University. They will then host Mount Marty on Saturday. Head Coach David DeSimone’s squad opened up GPAC play with back-to-back wins.

Last time out, Concordia defeated Hastings, 6-1, while taking five of six singles matches. For his play at No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles, junior Joe Bindl was named the GPAC Player of the Week. Additional singles wins were claimed by Jeremiah Berryman at No. 2, Luke Zoller at No. 3, Isaac Howes at No. 4 and Juan Rabellino at No. 6. In addition, the doubles combos of Berryman and Gregor Lainer at No. 1 and Bindl and Zoller at No. 3 were victorious.

On the season, DeSimone’s team owns wins over William Jewell College (Mo.), Sterling College (Kan.), Bethany College (Kan.), Tabor College (Kan.), Morningside and Hastings. Concordia and Midland are currently the lone GPAC squads with 2-0 conference marks. Doane is 1-0. The current conference rankings list the Bulldogs at No. 3, behind Midland and Doane. From an individual standpoint, Bindl has led the way with an 8-1 singles record. Bindl has gone 3-0 in doubles when paired with Berryman.

This week’s opponents have struggled in the win-loss department. Baker is currently 1-11 with the one victory being a 7-0 decision over Hastings. The Wildcats also played Midland and dropped that match, 6-1. Meanwhile, Mount Marty is 0-6 with conference defeats coming at the hands of Northwestern and Midland (both by 7-0 team scores).

Following this week’s action, three regular season matches (all against GPAC opponents) will remain on the schedule. Concordia will travel to Northwestern on April 17 before closing the regular season against Doane (April 20) and Midland (April 27).
