SEWARD, Neb. – The first official action for Concordia University Men’s Soccer since playing at the 2022 NAIA national tournament is coming up in late August. The program announced its 2023 slate on Monday (May 8) and now looks forward to kicking off a new season at home on Aug. 26. The rundown for the ’23 regular season includes 17 games, including 11 versus GPAC opponents. Head Coach Jason Weides’ squad will appear on the home turf nine times with the season’s first three matches set to take place at Bulldog Stadium.
Expectations will be high for Weides’ 16th season as head coach at his alma mater. The Bulldogs are coming off a 2022 campaign that saw them go 15-3-3 overall, win the GPAC tournament title and advance to the NAIA national tournament. The group of returners features five All-GPAC honorees: Martin Herrera (second team), Matt Schultz (second team), Isaiah Shaddick (second team), Ryan Wokutch (second team) and Gabriel Mendoza (honorable mention).
Graceland University (Iowa) will serve as the season opening opponent on Aug. 26. During the nonconference portion of the schedule, Concordia will take on three foes from the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference, McPherson College (Kan.), Tabor College (Kan.) and York University, two opponents from the Heart of America Athletic Conference, Benedictine College (Kan.) and Graceland, and one from the North Star Athletic Association, Bellevue University. The six nonconference foes went a combined 40-50-22 last season. The in-state Bruins won 16 games as recently as the 2021 season. The Bulldogs earned wins last season over Bellevue, Tabor and York.
Conference play is slated to get underway on Sept. 16 with a visit from Mount Marty. A rematch of last year’s GPAC tournament championship game with Hastings will take place in Hastings on Oct. 14. There will be a new addition to the conference in 2023 as Waldorf University (Iowa) takes the place of Presentation College, which announced that the school would close at the conclusion of the 2022-23 academic year. Waldorf finished 2022 at 8-6-2 overall. The Concordia-Waldorf matchup is slated to be played at Bulldog Stadium on Oct. 21.
Dates for the 2023 GPAC tournament are Nov. 1 for the quarterfinals, Nov. 4 for the semifinals and Nov. 9 for the championship game. NAIA National Championship play will get started with the first and second rounds (Nov. 16, 18) before action shifts to the final site in Wichita, Kan., Nov. 27-Dec. 4.
