Bulldogs drop third straight as Morningside rallies for 2-1 victory

Morningside College rallied for a 2-1 men’s soccer win over Concordia University on Saturday evening in Sioux City.  Morningside moved to 6-8-1 overall and 4-4-1 in the GPAC with the win.  Concordia suffered its third straight tough loss.  The Bulldogs are 7-7-2 overall and 4-5 in conference play following the loss.

Aaron Skipworth put Concordia on top with a penalty kick goal in the second half.  It was Skipworth’s team-best ninth goal of the season.  However, Morningside responded with two goals within four minutes of each other.  Mike Marian scored his second goal of the season with 17 minutes remaining in regulation.  Kyle Larkin was credited with the assist.  With 13 minutes left in the game, Rick Kievits scored his eighth goal of the season to put the host Mustangs on top.  Jeremy Lenz picked up the assist on what turned out to be the game-winning goal for Morningside.

The Mustangs totaled 13 shots in the game (five shots on goal) compared to 10 for the Bulldogs (six shots on goal).  Concordia held a slim 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Matt Mayfield made five saves and picked up the win for Morningside.  Chris Podlich made three saves in a losing effort for Concordia.

Concordia travels to Hastings College for a 7:30 contest against the undefeated and GPAC-leading Broncos on October 26.
