FREMONT, Neb. – Twelve Bulldogs emerged from the USA Powerlifting Central Collegiate Cup Series with at least one school record breaking performance. Their efforts led Concordia University, Nebraska Powerlifting to team place finishes of second on the women’s side and third on the men’s side at the event hosted by Midland in Fremont, Neb. In addition to Concordia and Midland, the field included athletes from the likes of Davenport University (Mich.), Friends University (Kan.), McKendree University (Ill.), the University of Nebraska-Kearney and others.

The Collegiate Cup Series marked the second event of the fall semester for Head Coach Freddie Myles’ squad, which also hosted the CUNE Collegiate Powerlifting Meet on Oct. 4. Said Myles, “I was pleased with how everyone lifted. Their hard work and dedication showed this weekend. Leo Guiza had an outstanding performance and achieved a total of more than 800 kg.”

A junior from Crete, Neb., Guiza raised the bar as compared to the October meet when he totaled 750 kg. Powerlifting is made up of squat, bench press and deadlift. Guiza was one of five Bulldogs to break school records across all categories, including cumulative total. The others who achieved that feat were Teya Badger (100 kg), Taylor Hedke (60 kg) and Katie Wilson (48 kg) on the women’s side and Dax Davis (56 kg) on the men’s side. Additional Concordia competitors who set new program standards in at least one category were Rylee Bentz (65 kg), Evyn Carpenter (90 kg), Abby Nelson (82.5 kg) and Nevaeh Osterbauer (65 kg) on the women’s side and Luis Alarcon (90 kg), Matthew Hernandez (67.5 kg) and Quentin Nelson (100 kg) on the men’s side.

A complete summary of new school records is displayed below. Guiza’s lifts at the Collegiate Cup Series were 290 kg in squat, 195 kg in bench, 317.5 kg in deadlift and an 802.5 kg total. His DOTS score of 476 also represents a program record. The DOTS score is used to compare lifters across weight classes. A returning All-American from last season, Hedke (Marysville, Kan.) pushed her personal best and school record total to 440 kg. She was just 7.5 kg out of first place in her weight class.

Beyond Guiza and Hedke, the school record totals were 500 kg for Badger, 457.5 kg for Davis, 572.5 kg for Hernanzez, 352.5 kg for Nelson and 297.5 kg for Wilson. A total of 24 Bulldogs competed at the Collegiate Cup Series.
