Outlook
Concordia University, Nebraska Men’s Golf reported to campus on Aug. 13 with the belief that it can lean upon greater depth and hopefully better consistency throughout the 2026-27 season. A finish at the bottom of the GPAC standings this past spring left the Bulldogs eager to turn the page while bringing back the bulk of their top performers. The graduation of Jake Richmond and Brock Rogers means that Jacob Dowd and Jude Elgert take on senior leadership roles within the varsity lineup.
Head Coach Brett Muller begins his 16th season leading the men’s and women’s golf programs. Muller has tested his teams with practice and qualifying rounds at several area courses prior to the start of fall semester classes.
“This will probably be the most depth we've had,” Muller said. “The five-through-nine spots are very tight right now. Finishing qualifying will be important, and then those guys performing well in tournaments will determine how they jockey for positions and move around in the lineup.
“That group from last year that's now sophomores probably went through some growing pains, but they really matured as the season went on. I thought those guys put together some good scores. I'm very excited to see where we're at through qualifying, especially with that group.”
Elgert will likely battle members of the strong sophomore class for the top spot in the lineup. As freshmen last season, three Bulldogs experienced the GPAC Championships in Dakota Dunes, S.D.: Calvin Zabloudil, Logan Krabbenhoft and Tyler Weismann. The Gretna East High School product Zabloudil led the way by placing 25th in the GPAC. Elgert (T-42nd) and Krabbenhoft (48th) followed while navigating the challenging Dakota Dunes Country Club.
The conference tournament performance (325-324-322–971) fell below expectations, but the 2025-26 team did manage to etch its name into the school record book with the lowest 18-hole total in program history – a two-under-par 278 in round two of the Doane Spring Invite. However, Concordia cracked 300 as a team in only two rounds and completed the season with a scoring average of 314.6.
Says the senior captain Dowd, “It definitely wasn't a great finish last year at conference. I feel like so far this year we've got a good group of guys. The freshmen have been really good and have competed for spots right away. We've got a good group of younger guys. We obviously lost two important pieces in Jake Richmond and Brock Rogers. Replacing them will be tough just because of their consistency for four years. But we've got a good group. We've got a young team, and we're looking forward to this upcoming season.”
The roster of 16 also includes seniors Bret Brenneis and Maxwell Fremarek, in addition to one junior, seven sophomores and four freshmen. In terms of pure season scoring average, the top returners from 2025-26 are Zabloudil (78.2), Weismann (79.4), Elgert (79.5), Krabbenhoft (79.6), Charles Summy (79.8) and Dowd (81.8). Zabloudil made waves last fall with a top 10 finish at the Nebraska Intercollegiate. He also shot a 69 as part of the team’s record-breaking round at the Doane Invite.
A transfer a year ago out of Central Community College – Columbus, Elgert may be ready to take that next step as a dependable player each tournament. His top round last season was a 73 at the Bent Tree Intercollegiate in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
“Right now, Jude Elgert has earned the No. 1 spot through four rounds,” said Muller on Aug. 18. “Two of his four rounds have been under par. Calvin put together a great round, shooting four under at Mahoney in round three. It was great to see that from those guys. Michael (Koenig) also had a great round, shooting under par at York in qualifying. We're getting a collection of guys who are playing some rounds under par.”
The newcomers to the roster are Drew Burk (Holstein, Iowa), Wyatt Groves (Omaha, Neb.), Jack Hadenfeldt (Dannebrog, Neb.) and Dalton Kumm (Fremont, Neb.). Hadenfeldt turned in a 15th-place state finish during his career at Centura High School.
It would be a good problem for Muller to have to solve if the freshmen are able to put themselves in the mix for varsity positions. While competition is intense leading up to the season’s first events, the Bulldogs are still finding time to build relationships and become closer as teammates.
Says Dowd, “I feel like getting off to different courses that you don't see all the time, kind of some different styles of courses, has been really good for us. Early on in the year, we've also done a lot of team-bonding stuff. We’ve been able to hang out with the guys in a less serious manner. It’s good for the freshmen to just be able to hang out with us and get to know us a little bit more.”
Dowd added that the team is still working on hammering out expectations. Dowd desires to shoot better scores more consistently while helping the team post higher placements at tournaments, especially the 2027 GPAC Championships.
For Muller, it’s about the process of laying a foundation. Said Muller, “Being able to stack days and continue to improve is important. The offseason is so important with the fall season and then transitioning into the spring. Winters can be pretty tough, but taking advantage of the hitting center, putting in extra time there and making sure we're really ready to go will be important.”
The ’26-27 campaign will officially tee off at the Mount Marty Invite slated for Aug. 31-Sept. 1. Concordia will play its home course, Highlands Golf Course in Lincoln, while co-hosting the Blue River Classic on Sept. 9-10. The 2027 GPAC Men’s Golf Championship is tentatively scheduled to be played at Dakota Dunes Country Club in Dakota Dunes, S.D., with dates to be determined. View the complete 2026-27 schedule HERE.
