LINCOLN, Neb. – Bone chilling temperatures on day one gave way to sunny and pleasant weather on day two of the Doane Spring Invite (March 17-18). The conditions were ripe for going low on Wednesday, and Concordia University, Nebraska Men’s Golf took advantage while breaking the school record for lowest 18-hole team score. The Bulldogs fired a two-under-par 278 in round two, spurred by three individuals who shot below par.
Overall, Head Coach Brett Muller’s ‘A’ team placed eighth (321-278–599) out of 19 groupings in a large field that navigated Highlands Golf Course on day one and Mahoney Golf Course on day two (both in Lincoln). A total of 12 Concordia competitors joined the field of 107 individuals.
“It was two completely different days,” Muller said. “Yesterday we were waiting for it to warm up to 32 degrees before we started. The first four or five holes, we were kind of feeling sorry for ourselves yesterday. Once we settled in, we played okay. Obviously great weather today, and some guys put together some special rounds. To have three guys under par was huge for our team score. I’m really proud of the work the guys put in this winter. It’s great to see it come to fruition with the 18-hole team score school record.”
On the par-70 course at Mahoney, three Bulldogs shot their career lows for a single round: seniors Jake Richmond (-3; 67) and Brock Rogers (-2; 68) and freshman Calvin Zabloudil (-1; 69). Freshman Tyler Weismann (74) rounded out Wednesday’s team score. The two-under-par team total eclipsed the previous program record of one-under-par (283) turned in at the UC Ferguson Classic in August 2022. The Elkhorn, Neb., native Richmond also contributed to that performance.
In his latest outing, Richmond achieved a personal best 18-hole score of 67 while recording an eagle, four birdies and 10 pars. He placed in a tie for 16th on the overall leaderboard. In coming in hot on Richmond’s heels, Rogers and Zabloudil carded four birdies apiece in Wednesday's round. Rogers (80-68–148) finished in a tie for 29th place and Zabloudil (81-69–150) landed at 42nd. As a freshman, Zabloudil has turned in three rounds at par or better on the season.
Another freshman, Logan Krabbenhoft, paced the Bulldogs’ B grouping at the Doane Spring Invite. He shot 76-73–149 and placed in a tie for 38th. His 76 led all Concordia individuals in Tuesday’s arctic conditions. The B squad shot 317-303–620 for the tournament.
The team scoring average entering tournament stood at 313.8. Seven groupings (mostly GPAC teams) shot below par in round two of the Doane Spring Invite. The temperature climbed above 70 degrees early in the afternoon in Lincoln.
Said Muller, “Mahoney is probably a little bit easier golf course than Highlands. Then you throw in the two different weather days – I’m glad we were able to take advantage of it.”
