Concordia 'A' group lands in third place at conclusion of Blue River Classic's first day

LINCOLN, Neb. – The annual Blue River Classic got underway on Tuesday (Sept. 5) morning from Highlands Golf Course in Lincoln and saw the Concordia University Men’s Golf ‘A’ team shoot a pair of sub-300 rounds. The Bulldogs will enter day two in third place while attempting to chase Doane and Morningside atop the leaderboard at the 2023 event. The tournament includes 89 golfers from 11 different institutions in a 54-hole format.

Head Coach Brett Muller’s squad was led on Tuesday by two current top 10 players on the individual leaderboard. Drew D’Ercole will enter the second day one stroke off the tournament lead.

The five Bulldogs on the ‘A’ team combined for a two-round total of 296-297–593 on the home course at Highlands. Fifteen Concordia players are taking part in the tournament (complete scores listed below). While D’Ercole went low in Lincoln, senior Gavin McWhorter turned in a career low round of 69 (-3) to start the day. D’Ercole shot one under par in round one and finished his two rounds at 71-73–144. The next two in the Concordia lineup are Justin Webert in sixth (75-71–146) and Jake Richmond (75-73–148) in 11th. Doane’s Sam Arnold tops the field with his cumulative two-round total of 143.

McWhorter wound up carding a 36-hole score of 69-82–151 after hanging right with Arnold in round one. It was also a solid day for Drew D’Ercole’s younger brother Josh, who shot 76-76–152 and stands in 25th place. The respective team scores for the Bulldogs were 298-315–613 for the ‘B’ team and 308-318–626 for the ‘C’ team. The 297 shot in round two by the ‘A’ team was best in the field.
