SEWARD, Neb. – It was a historic night for the Concordia University cheer program, which competed in a dual that included stunting for the first time in school history. First-year head coach Mandi Maser’s team defeated Hastings, 74.4 – 71.85, in a competition that took place inside the PE Center Gym in conjunction with Wednesday night’s Bulldog basketball games.

“The have a passion and drive to keep challenging themselves and their hard work is paying off,” Maser said. “A win over a team that is co-ed and more experienced in stunting is a big boost to their confidence.”

Cheer first became an official varsity sport at Concordia in the fall of 2014. The roster currently consists of 20 team members, including two seniors, three juniors, seven sophomores and eight freshmen.

Competitive cheer and dance were approved as the 24th and 25th officially sponsored NAIA national championship sports in April of 2016. The 2017 NAIA Competitive Cheer & Dance National Championships are set to take place March 10-11 in Oklahoma City, Okla.

The next competition for the Bulldog cheer team will be the GPAC Cheer and Dance Invitational in Hastings, Neb., on Saturday, Feb. 11. Concordia cheerleaders are also a regular part of the game day atmosphere, appearing prominently during such on-campus events as basketball, football, volleyball and wrestling.
