GAME NOTES: Concordia readies for non-conference contest

SEWARD, Neb. – This week the Concordia University men’s basketball team will take a small break from GPAC action. The Bulldogs are set to travel to York College on Wednesday before resuming conference play. The Tigers of Dakota Wesleyan University will pay a visit to Walz Arena Saturday.

Last time out
The ‘Dogs split their games last week, falling just short at Midland and taking a victory at Northwestern. Last Wednesday, Concordia traveled to Fremont and found themselves down 46-29 at the halftime break. In the second half, Ben Limback’s squad outscored the Warriors, but came up just short falling 78-75. On Saturday, thanks to a career high scoring effort by junior Chandler Folkerts, the Bulldogs found an 87-81 win at Northwestern.

Robby rewriting record books
Senior Robby Thomas has been at work this season trying to leave his mark in Concordia basketball’s record books. Thomas has joined the 1,000 point club after scoring 19 at Northwestern on Saturday. The senior is just 12 blocks away from tying the all-time record of 188 set by Glen Snodgrass in the 1995-98 seasons.

GPAC grade
As a team in the conference, Concordia leads in blocks per game (4.35) and total blocks (74), ranks second in scoring margin (7.88), field goal percentage defense (.428) and defensive rebounds per game (29.59) and ranks third in scoring defense per game (78.71), free throw percentage (.733), field goal percentage (.493) and total rebound margin (4.82). Scouting the York College Panthers
The Panthers of York hold a 13-6 overall record and have won the past two contests over Trinity Bible College and Hillsdale Free Will Baptist College. As a team, the Panther average 81.5 points and 42.9 rebounds a game. From the field the squad shoots .440, including a 31.9 percentage from 3-point land. Cameron Coleman leads York in scoring, averaging 18.2 points per game and also averages 5.7 rebounds per game. The Panthers are led by head coach Delton Deal who is in his sixth season at York College. Deal is assisted by Tree Burks and Kory Slaughter.

Scouting the No. 13 Dakota Wesleyan University Tigers
The Tigers of Dakota Wesleyan own a 13-6, 5-4 GPAC record so far this season. The Tigers will host Morningside on Wednesday before traveling to Seward on Saturday. In recent action, Dakota Wesleyan suffered losses to No. 18 Hastings and Northwestern before taking a slim, two-point victory over Dakota State. The Tiger squad averages 89.5 points and 33.1 rebounds per game. Dakota Wesleyan holds a 48.3 field goal shooting percentage and a 37.7 3-point field goal percentage.  One of four Tigers to average double-digit scoring, Trae Bergh leads the team with 22.6 tallies per contest. The Tigers are led by head coach Matt Wilber who is in his third season at Dakota Wesleyan. Wilber is assisted by Jacob Brandl, Logan Diede and Alex Fodness.

Up next for the Bulldogs
No. 18 Hastings and Mount Marty are up next on the Concordia men’s basketball team’s slate. Next Wednesday the Broncos will travel to Walz Arena for an 8 p.m. tipoff. In their previous meeting this season, the ‘Dogs fell short to Hastings, 87-80. Then on Saturday, the Bulldogs will travel to Mount Marty, who suffered a 94-79 loss from Concordia earlier this season, for a 4 p.m. start time.
