GAME NOTES: Bulldogs to travel to Midland, Northwestern

SEWARD, Neb. – The (RV) Concordia men’s basketball team will take on Midland University Wednesday and Northwestern College Saturday this week to continue GPAC play. Both contests will be on the road.

Last time out
Over the Christmas break, the Bulldogs stayed busy with three contests. While in California, the Concordia men’s squad won over Simpson University, 74-52 and crushed No. 23 Cal Maritime 75-48. Back on their home court, the ‘Dogs suffered a loss in their first game of 2016. No. 12 Briar Cliff handed CUNE a 90-82 undoing.

Robby rewriting record books
Senior Robby Thomas has been at work this season trying to leave his mark in Concordia basketball’s record books. The Kansas native is tied for second in all-time blocks with 173. Currently holding the number one spot is Glen Snodgrass who amassed 188 blocks from 1995-98. Thomas is also 19 points away from joining the 1,000 point club and has already scored 213 this season. With 114 rebounds this year so far, Thomas passed his coach, Ben Limback on the all-time rebounds list. The senior now ranks 11th with 568 boards.

GPAC grade
As a team in the conference, Concordia leads in blocks per game (4.6) and in total blocks (69), ranks second in scoring margin (8.73), field goal percentage defense (.422) and defensive rebounds per game (29.8), ranks third in scoring defense per game (78.6), total rebound offense per game (40.6), free throw percentage (.734), field goal percentage offense (.488) and total steals (112), ranks fourth in total rebound margin (5.2) and steals per game (7.47) and ranks fifth in scoring offense per game (87.3), total rebound offense (609), total rebound defense per game (35.4), offensive rebounds per game (10.8), assists per game (16.73), total assists (251), 3-point field goals made per game (8.6), 3-point field goals made (129) and assist/ turnover ratio (1.16). Scouting the Midland University Warriors
The Warriors of Midland University hold a 7-8 overall record and a 4-3 record in the GPAC. In recent action, the Warriors defeated Morningside College 78-49 on Jan. 2. As a team, Midland averages 77.8 points and 36.7 rebounds per game. From the field, the Warriors shoot 48 percent and 39.4 percent from 3-point range. Alex Starkel leads the team in scoring, averaging 15.8 points a game. MU has two more Warriors averaging double digit scoring this year. The Warriors are led by head coach Oliver Drake who is in his first season at Midland University. Drake is assisted by Josh Pickens, Thaddeus Perry, Wyatt Spalding and Trey O’Brien.

Scouting the Northwestern College Red Raiders
The Red Raiders of Northwestern College hold an 8-8 (2-5 GPAC) record as of Monday, Jan. 4. The Raiders will face Dakota Wesleyan before hosting the Bulldogs this week. Last weekend, NWC suffered an 82-75 loss to Doane College. As a team, the Red Raiders average 89.3 points and 41.6 rebounds a game. Leading Northwestern is Colton Kooima who averages 19.8 points a game. Two more Red Raiders average double-digit scoring. The Red Raiders are led by head coach Kris Korver who is in his 16th season at Northwestern. Korver is assisted by Rick Clark, Brandt Carlson and Tony Krogman.

Up next for the Bulldogs
The (RV) Concordia men’s basketball team will split a pair of contests on the road and at home next week. On Wednesday, Jan. 13, the Bulldogs will travel to York College for a non-conference matchup before hosting No. 9 Dakota Wesleyan on Saturday, Jan. 16.
