High powered offense lifts Midland University to sweep of Concordia
Midland University erupted for 21 runs and 25 hits in a GPAC baseball sweep over Concordia University on Saturday afternoon in Seward. The Warriors picked up 10-1 and 11-1 victories over the Bulldogs to improve to 11-12 overall and 3-0 in conference play. Concordia dropped to 11-14 overall and 2-2 in conference games.
Midland jumped all over Bulldog starting pitcher Jordan Stirtz (Gretna, Neb.) in the opening game of the day. The Warriors scored four runs in the top of the first inning to grab the early advantage. Vinnie Orsi delivered a 3-run homer in the inning for the Warriors.
The Warriors added two more runs in the third and fourth innings and added single runs in the fifth and seventh. Concordia’s lone run of the game came on an RBI single by Ray Finley (Tucson, Ariz.) in the fourth inning.
Alex Johnson picked up the win on the mound for Midland in game one. He allowed the one run on six hits with three walks and nine strikeouts. Orsi drove in three with a homer, and Derek Kampschneider homered and drove in two for the Warriors in game one.
Dustin Matlock (Colorado Springs, Colo.) had two hits for Concordia. Stirtz dropped to 1-2 after allowing eight runs on seven hits with two strikeouts in four innings of work.
Game two was more of the same, as Midland jumped out to a big lead early in the contest. Midland did all of its damage in the first three innings and cruised to the 11-1 win in five innings. The Warriors scored two runs on one hit and four walks in the top of the first inning to knock Bulldog starter Caleb Taylor (Georgetown, Texas) out of the game.
Midland plated four more runs in the second. Lucas McCain led off the inning with a solo homer. DJ Johnson drove in two with a double, and Alex Johnson knocked in another run with a double in the Warrior second inning. The Warriors put the game out of reach with five runs in the third. Kampschneider delivered the big blow with a grand slam in the inning.
Concordia scored its lone run in the fourth. Brandon Pflug (Ft. Morgan, Colo.) doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Finley. Concordia managed just three hits in game two.
Matt Trejo picked up the win on the mound for the visiting Warriors. He allowed the one run and three hits with no walks and five strikeouts. Kampschneider and DJ Johnson combined to drive in seven of Midland’s 11 runs in the game.
Concordia travels to Mount Marty College on Sunday.
