Bulldogs swept at Mount Marty
Mount Marty College swept Concordia in GPAC baseball on Sunday in Yankton. Scores were 14-4 (six innings) and 8-7. The Bulldogs dropped to 11-16 overall and 2-4 in conference play with the losses.
The host Lancers scored in five of the six innings in their game one victory. Mount Marty totaled 16 hits in the contest. A total of six different players totaled multiple hits in the game for the Lancers. Jason Schmidt was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBI’s. Mathias Godsil was a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs scored, while Jason Livermont, Logan Kortan and Justin Kemp all drove in two runs for the Lancers. Nick Huston picked up the win on the mound for Mount Marty in game one. He allowed four runs on four hits with three walks and six strikeouts.
Ray Finley (Tucson, Ariz.) and Brandon Pflug (Ft. Morgan, Colo.) each had a hit and a run driven in for Concordia in the loss. Zak Goodrich (Lutz, Fla.) and T.J. Conway (Crete, Neb.) also had hits and each scored a run for the Bulldogs. Steven Ivanoff (Tucson, Ariz.) took the loss on the mound. He allowed eight runs on 10 hits with one walk and two strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work.
In game two, Concordia grabbed an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Anthony Flores (Craig, Colo.) connected on a 3-run homer for the Bulldogs in the inning. Mount Marty responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Jared Miller had an RBI double, and Allen Hemeyer added an RBI single for the Lancers.
Mount Marty grabbed a 5-3 lead with three runs in the second. Jason Livermont drove in two with a single, and Jason Schmidt followed with an RBI single in the Lancer second inning. Mount Marty added a single run in the third on a sacrifice fly by Logan Kortan to take a 6-3 lead.
The Bulldogs rallied with four runs in the fifth. With two outs in the inning, Mitch Nathan (Golden, Colo.) reached on an error. Conway pinch ran for Nathan and scored on an RBI double by Finley. Following a single by Pflug, Flores delivered his second 3-run blast of the game to give Concordia a 7-6 lead.
The Concordia lead didn’t last long, however, as Mount Marty scored twice in the bottom of the fifth. Allen Hemeyer singled to lead off the inning. Following a sacrifice which moved Hemeyer to second, Ross Heine delivered an RBI single to tie the game at 7-7. Following a groundout that moved Heine to second, Justin Kemp put the Lancers on top with an RBI single. Concordia was unable to rally in the final two innings, and Mount Marty held on for the 8-7 victory.
Concordia totaled seven hits in game two. Finley and Flores each had two hits, while Flores drove in six with his two homers in the contest. Josh Anderson (Westminster, Colo.) suffered the loss on the mound for the Bulldogs. He allowed two runs in two innings of relief. Jacob Yurich (Aurora, Colo.) started the game for the Bulldogs and allowed six runs on five hits with four walks and two strikeouts in three innings of work.
Concordia steps out of conference play to host York College on April 5. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Plum Creek Park.
