Bulldogs drop two at Peru State
Peru State College picked up a pair of baseball wins over Concordia University on Saturday afternoon. Scores were 1-0 and 6-5. The Bulldogs dropped to 8-9 with the losses.
Game one remained scoreless until the sixth inning. Andre Kinder led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second base on a passed ball. A ground out by Patrick Knabe advanced Kinder to third with one out. With two outs in the inning, J.L. Thomason delivered an RBI single to put Peru State on top 1-0. Concordia was unable to rally in the seventh, and Peru State held on for the victory.
Peru finished with six hits in the game compared to five for Concordia. Anthony Flores (Craig, Colo.) finished with two hits for the Bulldogs. Steven Ivanoff (Tucson, Ariz.) suffered the loss on the mound. He allowed just the one run on five hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Jon Sanley picked up the win on the mound for Peru State. Sanley allowed four hits with one walk and 10 strikeouts for the Bobcats.
In game two, Peru State took an early lead but had to rally late for the win. The Bobcats took a 3-0 lead in the third inning. Gustavo Arcia led off the inning with a solo homer. Kinder had an RBI groundout, and Knabe added an RBI single in the Bobcat third.
Concordia rallied to tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the fourth. Flores led off the inning with a double, and a Peru State error placed runners at first and third with nobody out. A bunt by Dustin Matlock (Colorado Springs, Colo.) scored Flores. Kyle Ivanoff (Tucson, Ariz.) added a 2-run double later in the inning for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs took a 5-3 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. Matlock reached via error and scored on an RBI triple by Tate Bedwell (Colorado Springs, Colo.). Bedwell scored later in the inning on another Peru State error.
The host Bobcats rallied with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Peru State had just one hit in the inning but took advantage of three walks and a hit batter. All the damage was all done with two outs in the inning. A hit batter and two walks loaded the bases with two outs. Jonathan Castillo followed with a bases clearing triple to give Peru State a 6-5 lead. Concordia went down in order in the top of the seventh, and Peru State held on for the win.
Concordia had just five hits in the game. Bedwell and Ivanoff had two hits apiece. Jacob Yurich (Aurora, Colo.) suffered the loss on the mound, allowing six runs on five hits with four walks and three strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work.
The Bulldogs will be back in action on Sunday. Concordia and Peru State will again do battle, this time in Seward. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 at Plum Creek Park.
