SEWARD, Neb. – Following back-to-back GPAC Pitcher of the Year awards, Concordia University, Nebraska graduate Alex Johnson inked a contract this week (July 20) with the Lincoln Saltdogs of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball. Johnson has joined the Saltdogs’ active roster for their home series with the Sioux City Explorers. Johnson concluded his career with the Bulldogs in 2026, a season that resulted in a seventh-straight national tournament appearance for Head Coach Ryan Dupic’s program.

Johnson follows other recent Concordia Baseball standouts to sign professional contracts, including Jason Munsch (Milwaukee Brewers organization in 2020), Joey Grabanski (Windy City ThunderBolts in 2024) and Jaidan Quinn (Lake Erie Crushers in 2025).

Stated Coach Dupic, “This is a well-deserved opportunity for Alex to continue his baseball career. The American Association is a competitive professional baseball league. It is a testament to Alex’s skillset and development for him to get signed at that high level of baseball.”

During his collegiate career, Johnson (Olathe, Kan.) earned respect for his performance on the field and for his strong Christian character. In recognition of his athletic and scholarly achievement, Johnson was named by College Sports Communicators as the 2026 NAIA Baseball Academic All-America Team Member of the Year. In addition to being tabbed a two-time GPAC Pitcher of the Year, Johnson is a three-time First Team All-GPAC, two-time CSC Academic All-America and All-District and five-time NAIA Scholar-Athlete honoree.

Johnson spent six seasons with the Bulldogs while persevering through the Tommy John surgery he underwent in December 2023. Johnson returned to the diamond in 2025 and proceeded to earn back-to-back GPAC Pitcher of the Year awards. Johnson rose to the top of the school’s all-time lists for career strikeouts (320) and games started (51) while ranking third in wins (26), fourth in innings pitched (237), seventh in earned run average (3.49) and 10th in pitching appearances (51). Johnson equaled a program single season record for strikeouts with 109 in 2026. This past season, Johnson won all seven of his GPAC league starts and produced a 3.88 ERA with a .230 opponent batting average in 67.1 innings.

The Lincoln Saltdogs play their home games at Haymarket Park in Lincoln. The regular season schedule runs through early September and can be found HERE.
