SEWARD, Neb. – A school record number of Concordia University student-athletes have been named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes. The 2018-19 total of 117 Scholar-Athletes tops a previous high of 101 achieved in the 2013-14 academic year. The latest wave of honorees pushes the institution’s NAIA leading all-time total to 1,477 Scholar-Athletes.

The Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athlete program recognizes excellence in the classroom for those NAIA student-athletes who are juniors or seniors with an academic standing of a 3.5 or higher cumulative GPA. Students must appear on the eligibility certificate for the sport and have attended two full years as a non-transfer or one full year as a transfer. The awards are given annually to outstanding student-athletes in the various sports in which the program is active and their respective teams are eligible for NAIA postseason competition.

The Bulldogs have been a regular at or near the top of national lists for NAIA Scholar-Athletes, NAIA Scholar-Teams and CoSIDA Academic All-District/All-America selections. During the 2017-18 academic year, 20 Concordia varsity squads achieved NAIA Scholar-Team status. In addition to more than 100 NAIA Scholar-Athletes in 2018-19, eight high achieving Bulldog athletes earned CoSIDA Academic All-District accolades this school year (see list below).

From a pure athletic competitive standpoint, 2018-19 was another solid year for Concordia. It finished No. 2 in the GPAC All-Sports Trophy Standings and has now placed either first or second in four of the past five years. A total of six GPAC titles were claimed by Bulldog sports teams in 2018-19 with women’s basketball celebrating the program’s first ever national title. In the most recent (May 24) NAIA Learfield IMG College Directors’ Cup Standings for 2018-19, Concordia came in at No. 42 (out of well over 200 NAIA schools) with the likelihood of moving up when track and field is factored in.
