SEWARD, Neb. – Starting with the 2017-18 academic year, the Bulldog Athletic Association began naming male and female athletes of the month. Nominees for the monthly award are comprised of the Bulldog Athletic Association athletes of the week throughout that month. The athletes of the month for April were voted on by attendees at the May 1 Athletic Association luncheon. Recipients of the monthly awards will receive plaques from the athletic department.
The Bulldog Athletic Association Athletes of the Month of April are freshman Hhana Haro of the softball program and Luke Zoller of the men’s tennis program.
Haro, a native of Garden Grove, Calif., is the only freshman in 2017-18 to win an athlete of the month award. Haro enters the conference tournament as the GPAC leader in batting average (.500), hits (73) and on-base percentage (.538). During the month of April, she hit .463 (25-for-54) with 14 runs scored, eight doubles, a triple a home run and nine RBIs over 16 games. In just her first collegiate season, Haro has broken the softball program record for doubles in a season (20) and currently shares the school single-season standard for hits. She is attempting to become just the third player in program history to bat .500 or better for a full season.
Zoller, who hails from Lenexa, Kan., has become a formidable player near the top of the singles lineup for head coach Joel Reckewey. Zoller tops the Bulldogs with a 10-8 season singles record while playing most at the No. 2 spot. During the month of April, Zoller went 3-2 in GPAC singles matches, claiming wins over opponents from Doane, Midland and Mount Marty. Over that same time frame, Zoller also teamed up with Jeremy Berryman on three doubles victories at the No. 1 spot. Zoller is 10-8 overall this season in doubles action.
