SEWARD, Neb. – Incoming Bulldog hoopsters swept Southeast Nebraska All-Star Game Most Valuable Player awards in contests played at Southeast Community College in Beatrice, Neb., on June 18. Brevin Sloup, a Seward High School graduate, won the award on the men’s side as a member of the West roster. Meanwhile, Maggie Goltz of Falls City Sacred Heart, representing the East squad, collected the MVP plaque on the women’s side. Both are part of 2016-17 Concordia basketball recruiting classes.

The versatile Goltz dominated in putting up a line of 16 points, 11 rebounds and nine blocks at the all-star game. The 6-foot-1 guard/forward led Falls City Sacred Heart to a state title as a junior and is a three-time Class D2 first team all-state selection. She amassed 1,233 points and 716 rebounds while also breaking the Sacred Heart record for most made free throws during her prep career.

“Maggie is one of the most dynamic players we are bringing in,” said Bulldog women’s basketball coach Drew Olson. “She is 6-1 but plays like a point guard with her ball handling and passing skills. She is a great defender for multiple positions because of her length and understanding of the game. I don’t know where she is going to play, but I am excited to see where she fits in.”

Listed at 5-foot-10, Sloup is a point guard who broke Seward High School’s record for career scoring with more than 1,000 points. This past season the Lincoln Journal Star named Sloup a Class B second team all-state choice. He averaged 19.0 points and 4.0 rebounds as a senior. He put on a show in Saturday’s all-star game by totaling 23 points, six assists, two steals and four made 3-point field goals.

In a January interview with Prep Zone Weekly, Sloup said, “I love the coaches (at Concordia). A lot of people say that, but I can honestly say that. When they first came and offered me in August, they brought three coaches to the house. They’re always texting me and calling me after games. I felt like they really wanted me. I’m not saying other coaches didn’t want me, but I felt really comfortable with them.”

Said Bulldog men's basketball coach Ben Limback, "Brevin has a tremendous work ethic and a rare commitment to get better every day. He's been having a great summer and we expect him to be in the mix at the point guard position. He's a great, coachable kid and a joy to be around."

The all-star weekend in Beatrice also included a volleyball match on Friday (June 17) night. In that contest, 5-foot-2 defensive specialist Harlie Himmelberg (Lawrence/Nelson) competed for the West. She will join head coach Scott Mattera’s squad this fall.
