SEWARD, Neb. – Starting with the 2017-18 academic year, the Bulldog Athletic Association began naming male and female athletes of the month. Nominees for the monthly award will be comprised of the Bulldog Athletic Association athletes of the week throughout that month. The athletes of the month for March were voted on by attendees at the April 3 Athletic Association luncheon. Recipients of the monthly awards will receive plaques from the athletic department.
The Bulldog Athletic Association Athletes of the Month of March are sophomores Wade Council of the baseball program and Philly Lammers of the women’s basketball program.
Council, who hails from Colorado Springs, Colo., enjoyed a particularly impressive month with the bat. During March, he hit .395 (.30-for-76) with 23 runs scored, nine doubles, six stolen bases four home runs and 18 RBIs over 20 games. As a pitcher, he made three starts with his best one being a three-hit shutout at College of the Ozarks on March 18. Shortly after, Council pulled off a rare feat when the GPAC named him the conference’s player and pitcher of the week. On the season, Council is hitting .368 with four home runs and 20 RBIs while holding down the leadoff spot in the lineup for a Bulldog team that entered this week at 15-10 overall.
Lammers, an Omaha native, has been voted the athlete of the month for the second time in a row. Her month of March included all five games at the national championships during which she averaged 18.0 points, 9.8 rebounds, 2.2 blocks and 2.2 steals and was named first team all-tournament. Also tabbed a first team All-GPAC selection and first team All-American, Lammers led the program to its second all-time appearance in the national championship game. She ended the campaign with season averages of 13.8 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.4 steals and 1.3 blocks. A standout in the classroom, Lammers raked in CoSIDA Academic All-America recognition.
