SEWARD, Neb. – Starting with the 2017-18 academic year, the Bulldog Athletic Association began naming male and female athletes of the month. Nominees for the monthly award will be comprised of the Bulldog Athletic Association athletes of the week throughout that month. The athletes of the month for February were voted on by attendees at the Feb. 27 Athletic Association luncheon. Recipients of the monthly awards will receive plaques from the athletic department.
The Bulldog Athletic Association Athletes of the Month of January are sophomores Deandre Chery of the wrestling program and Philly Lammers of the women’s basketball program.
A native of Miami Gardens, Fla., Chery enjoyed a February that saw him clinch a spot in the NAIA Wrestling National Championships this weekend (March 2-3). While competing at the GPAC championships on Feb. 17, Chery put together a 3-0 day that included a win over the nation’s 12th-ranked wrestler, locking up a 174-pound conference championship. Five-time tournament place finisher this season, Chery owns a 24-13 overall record and leads the team with 13 pins. Last week he was named a second team All-GPAC selection. Chery is a first-time national qualifier.
Lammers, also the December Athlete of the Month, dominated during her team’s GPAC tournament championship run. During the month of February, Lammers averaged more than 15 points and eight rebounds per game as Concordia won each of its eight games, including a 90-88 thriller over Dakota Wesleyan in the conference tournament title clash. On the season, the Omaha native is averaging 13.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, 2.4 steals and 1.2 blocks per game. On Wednesday (Feb. 28), the GPAC named Lammers to its first team for the second year in a row. Lammers and the Bulldogs (32-1) now look forward to the national tournament.
