Barry, Hambly turn national success into athlete of month honors

SEWARD, Neb. – Both standouts at recent national championships, junior Grace Barry of the women’s basketball program and freshman Wyatt Hambly of the shooting sports program have been named the Bulldog Athletic Association Athletes of the Month of March 2019. Barry and Hambly were winners of voting that took place at the Bulldog Athletic Association Member Luncheon on Tuesday (April 9). Nominees for the monthly award are comprised of the Bulldog Athletic Association Athletes of the Week throughout that month. Recipients of the monthly awards will receive plaques from the athletic department.

Starting with the 2017-18 academic year, the Bulldog Athletic Association began naming male and female athletes of the month. Barry and Hambly have both earned the award for the first time.

Barry was the catalyst in leading the Concordia women’s basketball team to its first ever national title celebration. The Lincoln East High School product came away with Tournament MVP honors after a five-game March run that saw her average 14.2 points, 4.8 assists, 3.4 steals and 2.6 rebounds and shoot 52.1 percent from the field, 54.5 percent from 3-point range and 83.3 percent from the free throw line. Barry was also named a second team All-GPAC choice. While starting all 38 games at point guard, Barry steered head coach Drew Olson’s squad to a 35-3 overall record and GPAC regular season/postseason titles. For the season, she averaged 11.5 points, 5.7 assists, 3.7 steals and 2.8 rebounds and shot 47.2 percent from the field and 80.6 percent from the free throw line. Barry tallied a season high 19 points in three separate games, including the national semifinal victory over Northwestern.

Hambly is one of many promising freshmen within a shooting sports program guided by head coach Scott Moniot. Hambly, a native of Paso Robles, Calif., helped the Bulldogs to a fourth place podium finish in Division 2 of the ACUI National Championships in late March. At the national championships in San Antonio, Texas, Hambly posted scores that ranked in the team’s top three in each of six disciplines, including top scores in American skeet (97/100), American trap (99/100) and sporting clays (84/100). He tied for ninth place in the category of men’s combined American events and shared 10th place in the men’s American trap open event. Hambly placed 104th high over all out of 534 male shooters at the national championships. In addition, he earned all-conference honors and was the team’s HOA top shooter at the Prairie Circuit Classic in early October.
