All athletic events to be suspended March 16 through April 5

SEWARD, Neb. – In conjunction with the announcement made by the Great Plains Athletic Conference on Friday (March 13) morning, the Concordia University, Nebraska athletics department will suspend all intercollegiate athletic activities, including organized practice and competition, during the period of March 16 through April 5, 2020. The decision was made in response to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Per the GPAC release, the GPAC Council of Presidents will meet on Friday, March 27 to re-evaluate the situation. The conference continues to consult with campus leaders throughout the GPAC and is beginning to assess the viability of 2020 spring sports regular season and postseason competition.

Campus will reopen on Sunday, March 22 at 10 a.m. All classes will resume strictly online starting Monday, March 23 through Friday, April 3.

Also on Friday, the NAIA provided a COVID-19 update from a national perspective. A day earlier (March 12), the national office canceled all winter championships. As of now, spring championships remain in place as scheduled. The National Administrative Council and National Eligibility Committee both met Friday, March 13 to discuss the impacts on student eligibility and the spring 2020 season. The Council of Presidents Executive Committee will meet Monday to further review these issues.

If no further restrictions are mandated, Concordia and all other GPAC teams would be eligible to resume practices and competitions on Monday, April 6.
