Concordia promises students, faculty and staff a supportive, grace-filled community of caring peers, mentors and leadership. Guidelines and resources are available to help us mitigate the spread of illness on campus so we can work and learn as safely as possible.
Especially during these times, we all need to take care of ourselves and continue to monitor our health. Should you notice anything unusual, please seek medical guidance immediately. For students, please call Andreea Baker, Campus Nurse, at 402-643-7224.
Teledoc may be an option for faculty and staff. Concordia Plan Services is covering 100% of COVID-19 testing and treatment for Concordia Health Plan members.
To ensure we keep ourselves and others as safe and healthy as possible, we will all need to add new tasks to our daily routines. One of the most important additions to our routines is this self-screening sheet. Before you arrive on campus each day, please read through this sheet and follow the action steps. This sheet is for your personal use and safety; you do not need to turn it in.
When you are in common or shared areas of campus, please maintain physical distancing of six feet from others. Based on guidelines from the CDC, these distancing measures will help to mitigate the spread of illness. Signage is placed within all campus buildings to direct traffic flow and help you follow physical distancing.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
The CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where physical distancing measures are difficult to maintain. As a caring community, everyone is required to wear face coverings that cover your mouth and nose while on campus — including students, faculty, staff, guests and vendors. While indoors, face coverings are required at all times. In outside spaces, face coverings are required to be worn by every individual on campus when six feet of separation is not possible, such as walking to/from class.
Exceptions to this apply to students who are in their residence hall room or seated at a table in the cafeteria. In some instances, students engaged in athletic practices and competitions will follow modified safety measures as dictated by the NAIA and GPAC. Exceptions for professors are when they're instructing and can remain 10 feet away from students. Exceptions for faculty and staff are when working individually in their office or dedicated space.
We will provide all faculty, staff and students with two cloth face masks. You may bring and use your own as well. The CDC provides guidelines for proper face mask washing.
Those who cannot wear face coverings due to a diagnosed impairment should contact Student Health Services or Human Resources for accommodations. Documentation from a physician is recommended for those not able to wear face coverings.
Personal Interaction Comfort Levels
As we all make our return back to campus; we want to make sure you feel as comfortable as possible. To show others your comfort level for interacting, print out one of these signs to put on your office or dorm room door.
Please note, these personal guidelines are not meant to replace the campus-wide policy of wearing face coverings.
Procedure for Students with COVID-19 symptoms or infection
If you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms or have been exposed to someone who is experiencing COVID-19 symptoms or someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, please call the University Health Center immediately: 402-643-7224. Should the Student Health Center recommend a COVID-19 test, testing options are available in Seward. Tests will not be available or administered on campus. If you need to be tested, please coordinate your test through Memorial Hospital in Seward. Upon receiving a positive test result, the Student Health Center and/or local health agencies will begin contact tracing and assisting you with a move to isolation.
Procedure for Student Isolation
Isolation is used to separate people infected with a virus or disease (those who are sick with the virus and those with no symptoms) from people who are not infected. People who are in isolation should stay home until able to return to campus activities. Specific guidelines will be followed to remove a student from isolation. Students will be asked to isolate off-campus if possible. For students who do not have an option for isolating off-campus, we have limited designated isolation housing. We are not equipped to provide isolation spaces for students who do not live on campus.
We are prepared to provide care and assistance to students who may become infected with COVID-19 or who have been exposed to it. We have designated limited locations on campus to quarantine and isolate. If you are a student who tests positive for COVID-19, you must inform the Student Health Center. If you are experiencing symptoms or believe you may have been exposed to COVID-19, the Health Center will assist you to get tested.
If you test positive for COVID-19:
- Self-isolate for 10 days from the start of your symptoms. Whenever possible, we encourage students to self-isolate at home. We know that may not be feasible in some cases, and therefore for students who live in one of the residence halls, we have limited designated isolation housing. For students who live off-campus, please isolate in your off-campus residence.
- Continue self-isolation until you see improvement in symptoms and fever free for 24 hours (without the use of fever-reducing medications like Tylenol or Ibuprofen).
- Follow the instructions of your medical provider.
- You must be cleared to return to campus activities by the University's nurse in guidance from the local health department.
- If you are isolating on campus, meal delivery will be provided along with materials needed for continued academic participation.
As a student, if you have a negative test result with symptoms, you will be asked to follow the same isolation guidelines as described above.
Procedure for Student Quarantine
Quarantine is used to keep someone who might have been exposed to a communicable disease, like COVID-19, away from others. Quarantine helps prevent the spread of disease that can occur before a person knows they are sick or if they are infected with a virus without feeling symptoms.
If you are exposed to someone with COVID-19:
- Contact the Student Health Center for self-quarantine guidance.
- Confirm with the Student Health Center before returning to campus activities after completion of 14-day self-quarantine.
- Self-quarantine will require daily monitoring of symptoms and temperature checks. Limited supplies will be provided in quarantine and isolation spaces for temperature monitoring.
- We are not equipped to provide quarantine spaces for students who do not live on campus.
Note: You are still expected to self-quarantine for 14 days after an exposure has occurred even if you have a negative test result without symptoms.
University Health Services will be available for telehealth appointments with students in quarantine and isolation spaces. The Student Health Center will provide care and support to those students through frequent contact. Off-campus medical resources are available to students who have a positive COVID-19 diagnosis. The student will be given direct cell phone access to key staff members on campus in the event that they need help with anything.
Procedure for Faculty/Staff Self-Reporting COVID-19 Test Results
Should you, as an employee, be directed to get a COVID-19 test, you must notify HR. Please work with your supervisor on alternative work arrangements, as you will be required to self-quarantine until you receive a negative test result or are cleared by your doctor.
If you receive a positive test:
- Notify HR and pass along documentation of your test results
- Work with your supervisor and HR on working remotely, if possible
- HR will notify B&G of the need for increased sanitization in specific areas
You are required to be cleared by Four Corners, or your local health department, before returning to campus.
If I’m alerted by one of my employees that he/she is undergoing a test for COVID-19, what do I do? Do I tell someone? What do I tell them to do?
Tell your employee they are required to stay home in quarantine until they receive a negative test. Then, contact HR and let them know of the situation. HR will connect with your employee and provide the next steps.
If I’m at home because I’ve tested positive for COVID-19, or I have symptoms, am I allowed to work from home without having to use emergency paid sick leave?
In many cases, this is an option. Please work with your supervisor and HR to coordinate a plan for working from home during your quarantine or isolation.
If a student, faculty or staff member tests positive for COVID-19, contact tracing will be done and close contacts of the individual who tested positive will be alerted. The contact tracing will be done by the local health agencies and/or the University Health Center. The identification of the positive individual will not be identified unless medically necessary. There may be a rare situation during a health or safety emergency, however, in which Concordia may determine (in conjunction with health, law enforcement, or other such officials) that parents of students or eligible students are notified.
As partners in ministry, we understand that accommodations for working on campus may be necessary for individuals who are considered high risk or are caring for someone considered high risk. Alternative Work Agreements (AWAs) are available for employees to work with their supervisors should accommodations not be available for an on-campus work environment.
If you would like to explore alternative work arrangements, please fill out this form that will be reviewed by the Human Resources office. They will review all accommodation requests and collaborate with you to develop a plan that works best for you, your supervisor and your team.
University-related domestic travel is approved effective June 1, with some restrictions. International travel is restricted until further notice.
For domestic travel, please review the CDC travel guidelines and updated data related to COVID cases in the area you intend to travel. Travel to states with Level 4 (orange) advisories and higher is restricted. Air travel must be approved by supervisors. For faculty and staff who are traveling overnight, travel kits are available to check out from Human Resources.
University Car Usage
Approved drivers of the university vehicles must reserve 24 hours in advance to assure proper cleaning has been applied and cleaning products have been restocked. Face coverings should be worn inside the car when multiple people occupy the vehicle. Upon return to campus, the driver is responsible for wiping and spraying down all surfaces inside the vehicle, as well as door handles. Cleaning products will remain inside the vehicle at all times.
We know students with disabilities may need accommodations, in the classroom, in the dorms and in various other places. If you are a student with a documented disability who is seeking accommodations, please contact Concordia’s Disability Support Services for the first steps in this process. They will work with you to put together a reasonable plan for accommodation.
Student Move-In and LAUNCH
Extra precaution will be taken during student move-in procedures, including assigned move-in times and limited guest assistance. More information will be available closer to the student move-in dates.

Mental Health Services
Throughout the semester, Kathleen Von Kampen, Concordia’s mental health counselor, will continue to provide face-to-face and online services for students on campus, including personal sessions, Let’s Talk sessions and more.
For all faculty and staff, the Employee Assistance Program offers mental health counseling over the phone. The fee for the first six sessions is waived through Sept. 30, 2020.
Implementation and Enforcement of Policies
We are committed to keeping students, faculty, staff and the community as safe and healthy as possible. To do this effectively, everyone will need to take extra care to follow, as well as to remind and assist others to follow, protocols that have been implemented to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. These include but are not limited to the wearing of face coverings, physical distancing, size of gatherings, self-monitoring for symptoms and observing facility flow directions.
The University Security department, Student Life and Human Resources will address non-compliance through graceful methods to remind violators of our policies and protocols. In the event repeat violations occur, the university may remove those in violation from campus.
Should anyone in the community have concerns related to policy infractions, please alert the Student Life Office if student-related, Human Resources if employee-related or Campus Security if visitor-related.
