Koopman, Flaten earn weekly GPAC honors

A pair of Concordia University, Nebraska tennis players, Dean Flaten and Leah Koopman, were tabbed as the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) and Hauff Mid-America Sports tennis players-of-the-week for the week of March 26 -April 1, 2007. Koopman was co-player-of-the-week along with Alex Lawless of Briar Cliff.

Flaten, a senior from Wayzata, Minn., posted a 2-0 record at No. 1singles and 1-1 at No. 1 doubles (with partner Marcus Herring). Against the University of Sioux Falls Flaten picked up the only win of the day for the Bulldogs, upsetting Braden Bradfield - the 2006 GPAC player-of-the-year. Flaten won the first set 6-3 before dropping the second set 4-6. He edged out Bradfield 10-8 in the super tie-breaker to earn the victory.

Koopman, a sophomore from Hastings, Neb., teamed up with Hannah Krueger, going 1-1 for the week at No. 1 doubles. In singles play Koopman picked up wins against Sioux Falls and Briar Cliff. In fact, Koopman is perfect on the season, playing No. 5 singles for the Bulldogs. On the season she is 6-0, including a win against NCAA Division II Nebraska-Kearney.

The Concordia women's team, currently 5-2 overall, 3-0 in the GPAC, will host Hastings at 3:30 p.m. on April 10. Both squads will then take on Dordt and Morningside on April 14 in Fremont, Neb. The men, 5-3 overall, 1-1 in the GPAC, are back in at home on April 19 as the host Hastings.

Women sweep GPAC foes over weekend

31 MAR 2007

The Concordia University, Nebraska men's and women's tennis team were able to get in three matches despite rain over the weekend. The men's squad dropped their only match to the University of Sioux Falls, 8-1, while the women's team picked up a pair of wins, downing Sioux Falls and Briar Cliff University, each by a score of 7-2.

All of the matches were originally scheduled to be played outdoors in Fremont, Neb., but rain and high winds forced the matches inside. The women played their matches at the Fremont YMCA, while the men took on Sioux Falls at the Woods Tennis Center in Lincoln, Neb.

The Concordia women picked up the sweep, running their record to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the GPAC. With the loss the Bulldog men are now 5-3 overall and 1-1 in GPAC play.

The win marks the second time the Bulldogs (5-2, 1-0 GPAC) have blanked an opponent this season. The first time was against Austin College. Doane falls to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the GPAC.

Senior Dean Flaten picked up the only win of the day for the men, upsetting Braden Bradfield - the 2006 GPAC player of the year. Flaten won the first set 6-3 before dropping the second set 4-6. He edged out Bradfield 10-8 in the super tie-breaker to earn the victory.

In women's action the Bulldogs picked up a pair of 7-2 wins. On the day every player had a victory for Concordia. In the Briar Cliff win five of the six singles players for the Bulldogs had wins. Hannah Krueger, who lost at No. 1 singles, teamed up with Leah Koopman to take the win at No. 1 doubles, 8-3.

Koopman, a sophomore, was also victorious in the Sioux Falls match. In fact, Koopman has yet to loose playing from the No. 5 singles spot. On the season she is 6-0, including a win against NCAA Division II Nebraska-Kearney.

The Bulldog tennis teams have a busy Tuesday in store, as the men are scheduled to host Hastings College at 3:30 p.m., while the women will travel to Crete, Neb., to take on Doane at 4:00 p.m. in a match that was rescheduled due to weather.

Women undefeated in GPAC

14 APR 2007

The Concordia University, Nebraska tennis teams went different directions to play the same opponents but ended up with drastically different results on Saturday. The women picked up a pair of wins over Dordt College, 6-3 and Morningside, 8-1 while the men fell to Dordt and Morningside 6-3 and 8-1 respectively.

Because of the change for rain the women's matches were held in Fremont and the men's in Lincoln. Those locations would have allowed the teams to move to indoor courts if inclement weather was an issue.

The Bulldog women are currently with Hastings at the top of the GPAC standings with a perfect 5-0 record. Concordia is scheduled to take on the Broncos on Monday. Overall the Bulldogs are 7-2 on the season with three matches remaining.

The Concordia men are now 5-5 (1-3 GPAC) and will play on back-to-back days this week taking on Nebraska Wesleyan on Wednesday before hosting Hastings on Thursday.

On the women's side, the five GPAC wins ties the most ever by a Concordia team. The Bulldog women also had five wins in 2003 and 2006.

Against Dordt, the Concordia women led 3-0 after doubles and then won at No. 4, 5 and 6 singles. Leah Koopman continued her unbeaten streak at No. 5 singles, winning 6-0, 6-1.
Koopman teamed up with Hannah Kreuger to win at first doubles in both the Dordt and Morningside matches. As a team, the Bulldogs were perfect in doubles play, going 6-0 on the weekend.

Every Bulldog player had a victory at some points in the two matches. Chelsey Bartels and Koopman were both undefeated during the weekend.

Unfortunately for Concordia men the scores were the complete opposite of the women's, as they dropped both matches.

Against Morningside the Bulldogs picked up just one win with Dean Flaten and Marcus Herring taking No. 1 doubles, 8-6.

Trailing 2-1 after doubles play in the Dordt match Flaten tied the match with a 6-1, 1-6 (10-7) super tie-breaker win at No. 1 singles. However the only other Bulldog victory was at No. 4 singles at Mark Boettcher won in a tight one, 6-3, 6-2 (10-4).

Women's win streak at eight

16 APR 2007

The Concordia University, Nebraska women's tennis team made history on Monday evening with an 8-1 victory over Hastings College at the tennis courts on the campus of Concordia in Seward.

With the win the Bulldogs improve to 8-2 overall (6-0 GPAC) their best Great Plains Athletic Conference record in school history. Two previous Concordia women's tennis teams had reached the five-win plateau (2003, 2006) but none have had six victories.

Hastings falls to 8-4 overall (5-1 GPAC) with two matches remaining in the regular season.

Concordia has now won eight consecutive matches dating back to March 9 when they fell to NCAA Division II University of Nebraska at Kearney. The Bulldogs have two regular season matches remaining.

The Bulldogs opened up by sweeping the doubles matches and carried over the momentum into singles play.

Sophomore Leah Koopman, a Hastings, Neb., native, continued her quest for a perfect season at No. 5 singles, downing Molly Willet 6-3, 6-0.

Koopman's match was one of the exceptions in singles play as three of the matches were decided with the super tie-breaker. Hannah Krueger, Erinn Beckman and Chelsey Bartels all had super tie-breaker wins at No. 1, No.2 and No. 6 singles respectively.

The lone Hastings win of the evening came at No. 4 singles as Stacy Fausset defeated Concordia's Jess Svajhart.

Concordia is scheduled to travel to Lincoln to take on Nebraska Wesleyan University on April 18 at 4 p.m. at the Nebraska Tennis Center in a match that could decided who gets the No. 1 seed in the NAIA Region III Tournament.

Jackson named GPAC Player of the Week

The Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) announced the athletes of the week in their respective sports. Heather Jackson was named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/GPAC Women's Tennis Player-of-the-Week.

Jackson, a sophomore from Oak Creek, Wis., led the Bulldogs, posting a perfect record on the week. She was 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles. Jackson posted No. 3 singles wins over Hastings and Nebraska Wesleyan. She also had a pair of victories at No. 2 doubles over the same opponents, teaming up with Erinn Beckman.

The Concordia women's tennis team wraps up regular season action on Friday, taking on Midland Lutheran in Fremont, Neb. The Bulldogs will be the No. 2 seed in the NAIA Region III Tournament which is slated for May 4-5 in Fremont.

Women No. 2 seed in Region III Tourney

The Concordia University, Nebraska tennis teams wrapped up the regular season on Friday with a pair of victories over Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, Neb. The men won 8-1 while the women downed the Warriors 5-4.

At the NAIA Region III Tournament the Bulldogs will face the No. 3 seed, Hastings College. Earlier in the season Concordia defeated Hastings 8-1 in a match that featured four tie breakers.

Against Midland the women struggled in doubles, getting swept, before bouncing back to take five of the six singles matches.

Sophomore Leah Koopman completed a perfect regular season at No. 5 singles, downing the Warriors' Karen Kanuch 6-0, 6-1.

Freshman Brittany Marrs, playing in her first collegiate match, was the lone loss in singles play for the Bulldogs. Marrs dropped a tight first set, 7-5, before falling 6-0.

On the men's side the Bulldogs were without the services of No. 1 singles player, senior Dean Flaten, who had an interview for medical school. Instead, Marcus Herring slid up to the No. 1 spot and picked up a 6-2, 6-2, win. The only loss for the men came at No. 1 doubles where Herring and Tim Meyer fell 8-6.

The men end their season with a record of 6-7 overall, 2-5 in the GPAC.

The NAIA Region III tournament begins on May 4 in Fremont, Neb., play concludes on May 5. The winner advances to the NAIA National Championships on May 14-18 in Mobile, Ala.

Women's season ends in NAIA Regional
