Golf squads look to climb GPAC ladder in 2012-13

29 AUG 2012

Men at a glance:
2011 GPAC Finish: 8th
Head Coach: Brett Muller (2nd year)
Key Returner: Shawn Rodehorst
Key Losses: Matt Dauss, Caleb Davison, Lee Johanson, Patrick Meyer, Logan Waggy
Letterwinners lost/returning: 5/1

Women at a glance:
2011 GPAC Finish: 9th
Head Coach: Brett Muller (2nd year)
Key Returners: Mackenzie Deutschman, Chelsea Peck
Key Losses: None
Letterwinners lost/returning: 0/5
2011 GPAC All-Conference: Mackenzie Deutschman, Chelsea Peck

Stark contrasts in roster makeup define the most significant difference between the Bulldog men’s and women’s golf squads coming into the 2012-13 season. The women return all five letterwinners, including their two brightest stars, while the men will reload after the loss of seven seniors.

Head coach Brett Muller’s women’s team is constructed around a pair of seniors in 2011-12 GPAC All-Conference performers Chelsea Peck (Lincoln, Neb.) and Mackenzie Deutschman (North Platte, Neb.). The pair figures to be one of the top duos in the conference this season after Peck claimed ninth and Deutschman 15th at the 2011-12 GPAC Championships. Peck (90.6 average in 11 rounds) and Deutschman (93.2 average in 11 rounds) finished Nos. 1 and 2 for Concordia at every meet last season.

“We should move up in the conference, hopefully finish in the top four or five in the conference this year,” Muller said. “I think that’s kind of the girls’ goal. Last year we had Mackenzie, Chelsea and Madison (Phillips), and then the others were basically three freshmen that golfed on varsity. So all of those freshmen kind of got thrown into the fire and had to be ready to go right away. They did a good job.”

In order to improve upon their 9th-place showing at the GPAC championships last season, the Bulldogs will need Peck and Deutschman to be even better. Considering their natural abilities and the time each invests in fine-tuning their games, Muller has every reason to believe that will happen.

“Chelsea is just a pure golfer,” Muller said. “She’s got a great swing. She’s not very big. She doesn’t hit it very far, but she’s a great competitor and she probably has one of the best short games in the conference. That really saves her in the tournaments because she can’t get to the par 5’s in two or even three like everyone else can. But she can still make pars just because of her short game.”

As far as Deutschman, her work ethic may be her most admirable attribute as it relates to her golf game.

“The biggest thing with Mackenzie is she puts in a ton of time,” Muller said. “As soon as she gets out of class she’s out on the course and normally one of the last ones to leave practice. She’s always putting in the extra time.”

Sophomores Melissa McIntosh (103.2 average) and Jenelle Hallaert and Phillips (103.5 average), another senior, also return after each playing in 10 or more meets last season. The veteran squad will get competition for varsity spots from freshmen Gretyl Bremmer (Grand Island, Neb.) and Kristin Remm (Doniphan, Neb.).

A host of freshmen will have the opportunity to join sophomore Shawn Rodehorst (Kearney, Neb.) in the lineup on the men’s side. Of the five Bulldog golfers that saw regular action on the varsity squad last season, four depart, including Caleb Davison (led Concordia with a 78.9 season average).

Captain Logan Waggy (81.3 average) also graduated from a team that finished eighth at the GPAC Championships.

“Last year was somewhat disappointing with those seven seniors,” Muller said. “We kind of had hoped for bigger things. We got off to a pretty good start in the fall and just kind of tapered off in the spring.”

Rodehorst (79.9 average) will look to push Concordia up near the top half of the conference in 2012-13 after leading the Bulldogs with a 20th place finish at last season’s GPAC Championships. While only a freshman last year, Rodehorst never showed it. The Kearney native is at home on the golf course, a place of work for his father who is an assistant superintendent at a local course.

“He had a great year. He came in right away and earned a varsity spot,” Muller said. “He played three-man most of the year last year, so he was a great addition to the team.

“We knew he had the potential to do it right away. It’s kind of a big jump from high school golf to college golf. Not everybody’s ready for that. He came out and established himself right away that he was ready for that. He’s definitely one of the guys we can count on.”

Senior Nick Milberger and juniors Sam DeFreece and Andy Nevius are the remaining holdovers with varsity experience. The trio combined for seven appearances in varsity action in 2011-12.

The youth movement on the men’s side is headlined by the addition of five freshmen. Newcomers Sam Simonson (Saint Libory, Neb.) and Garrett Suchanek (Grand Island, Neb.) stand out due to their experiences under pressure at the high school level. Muller hopes the pair’s advancement to the Class D Nebraska State Tournament as high school seniors pays immediate dividends.

The men begin their fall season Sept. 6-7 at the Siouxland Invite, which will be played in both Orange City, Iowa, and Sioux Center, Iowa. The women tee off Friday at the Midland Invite in Fremont, Neb.

Women's golf finishes sixth at Midland Invite

31 AUG 2012

FREMONT, Neb. – Brett Muller’s women’s golf squad teed off for the first time in the 2012-13 season amongst a field of seven teams at the Midland Invite in Fremont, Neb., on Friday. Led by Mackenzie Duetschman’s 88, the Bulldogs carded a 381 to finish sixth at the 18-hole event.

“The thing that I really liked is that four of our five golfers improved on the back nine,” Muller said. “This is one of the toughest courses we play on. It’s so tight and the greens are quick. Our goal was to shoot a 370. We got a 381 so we weren’t too far off. This was a good measuring stick to see where we’re at.”

Duetschman, a senior from North Platte, Neb., tied Midland’s Emily Knop for fifth place in the individual chase, marking the highest finish for Duetschman in an event held outside the city of Seward. The Bulldogs’ Chelsea Peck, also a senior, came in right behind in a tie for seventh with an 89.

“They both played very well,” Muller said of Deutschman and Peck. “But I think they both came away a little disappointed. They have high expectations for themselves. They felt like they left some shots out there, but they kept the ball in play which is key with how tight the course was.”

Rounding out the varsity quintet for Concordia was Melissa McIntosh with a 101, Madison Phillips with a 103 and Jenelle Hallaert with a 106.

The other six teams competing in the Midland Invite were also Great Plains Athletic Conference schools. Northwestern shot an overall 358 to claim the team title. Meanwhile, Hastings’ Rachel Cavalier held off Doane’s JaCee Pilkington in a playoff and seized individual medalist honors as she carded an 86.

The Bulldog women’s golfers now look forward to the first GPAC qualifier event, which takes place Sept. 11 at Landsmeer Golf Course in Orange City, Iowa. The men begin their season Sept. 6-7 when they take part in the Siouxland Invite.

Windy conditions cause high scores at GPAC Qualifier

12 SEP 2012

By Taylor Mueller, Sports Information Assistant

ORANGE CITY, Iowa - It was a very hot and windy day at the first women’s golf GPAC Qualifier event of the 2012-13 season on Tuesday. Unforgiving weather conditions played a role in the high score carded by Brett Muller’s Bulldog women’s golf squad at Landsmeer Golf Club in Orange, City, Iowa, where Northwestern College played host.

Concordia finished the round in 11th place with a team score of 415 at the par-72 course that covered 5,816 yards.

“The high yesterday was 98 degrees and wind was blowing around 30 miles per hour with gusts above 45 miles per hour,” Muller said. “The weather is no excuse, though. Everyone played in the same conditions.  We let the wind affect us too much. We needed to be stronger mentally. The good news from (Tuesday) is that this was only one qualifier and there are three more to improve and move up in the conference.”

Leading the way for the Bulldogs was senior Makenzie Deutschman, who shot a team best 96 and was 13 shots behind leaders Lauren Fitts from Dakota Wesleyan and Emma Wynja who represented Northwestern. Following closely behind her with 99 strokes was senior Chelsea Peck. Next in line for Concordia was sophomore Melissa McIntosh with a score of 104, senior Madison Phillips with 116 and sophomore Jenelle Hallaert and 116.

Among the Concordia’s five golfers on Tuesday, each of them returned from last year’s team and four of the five participated in all four GPAC qualifier meets last season.

Dakota Wesleyan leads after round one with a team score of 352. Northwestern placed a close second with 354 strokes. Morningside College placed third with a score of 382.

The team with the lowest score after all four GPAC qualifiers are completed will gain an automatic berth into the National Championships next May. The last women’s GPAC qualifier of the fall season will be held Oct. 3 at Wilderness Ridge Golf Course in Lincoln, Neb.

First, the Bulldog women will look to rebound from their frustrating qualifying round when they travel to Lincoln for the Nebraska Wesleyan Invite that will run Sept. 16-17. The men tee off Thursday at Landsmeer Golf Club for their first GPAC qualifier.

Duetschman cards back-to-back 84s at NWU Invite

17 SEP 2012

LINCOLN, Neb. – Concordia senior Makenzie Duetschman continued her steady play on the course this fall by shooting an 84 on back-to-back days at the Nebraska Wesleyan Invite in Lincoln, Neb. As a team, the Bulldogs finished in eighth place out of 11 teams after carding a two-day 365-377–742 at the Sunday-Monday event.

The performance marked significant improvement from the team’s 415 at the first GPAC Qualifier event on Sept. 11 and its score of 365 on day one was its lowest 18-hole total in two years. Head coach Brett Muller was pleased with how the team responded after coming off a disappointing finish last week.

“We did a much better adapting to the adverse weather conditions today than we did at GPAC No. 1 last week,” Muller said. “The mental toughness was much better today than a week ago.”

Duetschman’s two-round total of 168 was good enough for a 13th-place individual finish. Senior Chelsea Peck came in next for the Bulldogs with a 31st-place finish after posting an 86-94–180. Melissa McIntosh (99-97–196), Madison Phillips (96-106–202) and Jenelle Hallaert (102-102–204) rounded out Concordia’s group of five at the Nebraska Wesleyan Invite.

Cool temperatures and morning mist greeted the field of more than 60 golfers representing 11 schools, including seven from the GPAC. Iowa Western Community College, which boasted individual medalist Joana Yanez (78-74–152), won the invite with a score of 319-311–630. Dakota Wesleyan came in second, finishing nine strokes behind Iowa Western.

The Bulldogs now set their sights on the Doane Invite at Wilderness Ridge Golf Course held Sept. 24-25 in Lincoln.

Deutschman's strong performance highlights final day of Doane Invite

25 SEP 2012

LINCOLN, Neb. – Concordia senior Makenzie Deutschman capped a solid second and final day at the Doane Invite on Tuesday by carding an 82. Despite her performance, the Bulldogs slipped from 18th place following Monday’s round to 20th place at the event’s conclusion. A total of 21 teams and more than 100 individuals competed at Wilderness Ridge Golf Course in Lincoln, Neb., site of the 2013 NAIA Women’s Golf National Championships.

As a team, Concordia shot a 388-392–780. Duetschman finished in a tie for 37th place (90-82–172) thanks to a strong Tuesday performance that saw her knock eight strokes off of her Monday total and post her best 18-hole score of the season. Her season average per 18 holes now sits at 87.3 through six rounds.

“Makenzie played lights out today,” head coach Brett Muller said. “For her to shoot her lowest score of the year on the toughest course we play all year really tells you how well she played today.

“Makenzie shot 41 both days on her first nine holes, so she was in good shape at the turn. Monday she played her final four holes 11 over par. Today she played those same four holes at even par.”

Senior Chelsea Peck (season average of 93.5 in six rounds) came in next for Concordia after shooting a 93-100–193. Peck was followed by sophomore Melissa McIntosh (99-103–202), senior Madison Phillips (106-107–213) and sophomore Jenelle Hallaert (108), who did not participate on Tuesday due to illness.

“Overall today was disappointing to shoot four shots worse on the same course we played the previous day,” Muller said. “I hope we learned something from the last two days. We need to bounce back and improve next Wednesday on the same course for GPAC Qualifier No. 2.”

Lubbock Christian (Texas) captured first place in the event that served as the fall preview for next spring’s national championships. Lubbock Christian individual medalist Sinae Montoya shot a 74-66–140 to fuel the Lady Chaps to a team score of 302-290–592, 24 strokes better than second place William Woods (Mo.).

Deutschman and the Bulldogs will be in action just once more in 2012. Concordia concludes the fall season on Oct. 3 when GPAC Qualifier No. 2 will be held at Wilderness Ridge. The Bulldogs will look to climb out of their current 11th-place standing after the first qualifier event that took place on Sept. 11.

Peck cards third-place round at Midland Invite

03 APR 2013

FREMONT, Neb. – Tee-time temperatures stood at a brisk 37 degrees as the Bulldog women’s golfers began the spring season at the Midland Spring Invite in Fremont, Neb, on Wednesday morning. Concordia senior Chelsea Peck, who finished the fall season with a 42 on the back nine at GPAC Qualifier No. 2, carded an 89 to tie for third amongst a field of 52 individuals in Fremont.

“It was a chilly start to the season,” Bulldog head coach Brett Muller said. “But we did a good job being prepared. They never used it as an excuse.”

With Concordia’s top golfer in the fall, Mackenzie Deutschmann, missing the spring season to student teach, the Bulldogs will look to Peck to lead the way. The Lincoln native’s six-over-par performance was one stroke off of second place and six off of first place. The 89 matched her score from the second GPAC qualifier back on Oct. 3.

“Chelsea was our highlight today,” Muller said. “She was pretty consistent throughout the day. She three-putted three times, otherwise she may have won it. I was real pleased with her effort.”

As a team, Concordia tied for sixth with a combined total of 397 among the team’s top four golfers. Sophomore Melissa McIntosh came in after Peck with a 99, senior Madison Phillips posted an even 100, sophomore Jenelle Hallaert notched a 109 and sophomore Allison Schieffer, participating in her first varsity meet, carded a 121.

Muller says Schieffer will be in competition with freshmen Gretyl Bremer and Kristin Remm for the fifth spot in the varsity lineup as the spring season continues.

Despite a lack of practice time this spring due to chilly weather, Muller believes the Bulldog women will make a leap forward after a difficult fall season. Concordia sits in 11th (415-392–807) in the GPAC after the first two qualifier events of the season.

“Everyone on the team is real positive,” Muller said. “We think we can improve on what we shot today. We’ll get back out there and show that we are better than we golfed during the fall semester.”

Midland won the team title with a score of 365 on Wednesday. Dordt’s Renae Visser captured medalist honors with an 83, five shots better than the second-place finisher.

The third women’s GPAC qualifier will take place Tuesday, April 9 in Hastings, Neb.

Rainy conditions wipe out GPAC qualifier

09 APR 2013

Head coach Brett Muller's Bulldog women's golfers got through nine holes before the decision was made to cancel Tuesday's GPAC Qualifier No. 3. Rain and cold weather made for unpleasant conditions at Southern Hills Golf Course in Hastings, Neb.

The final two qualifier rounds will be played on April 26 at Two Rivers in Dakota Dunes, S.D. Originally only GPAC Qualifier No. 4 was to take place in Dakota Dunes. The results from Tuesday will not carry over.

Peck paces Bulldogs at Nebaska Wesleyan Invite

15 APR 2013

LINCOLN, Neb. – The two-day Nebraska Wesleyan Invite came to a conclusion on Monday in Lincoln, Neb., where senior Chelsea Peck’s 100-98–198 topped an overall rough outing for the Bulldog women’s golfers. Head coach Brett Muller’s team did however knock 23 strokes off its frustrating Sunday effort. Concordia finished with a two-round 422-399–821 to place eighth at the event.

Peck came up short of her solid spring-opening 89 that she turned in at the Midland Invite on April 3. That effort had tied the Lincoln native for third place. Peck finished in a tie for 35th place at the Nebraska Wesleyan Invite.

Senior Madison Phillips (109-102–211) and sophomores Melissa McIntosh (105-100–205), Jenelle Hallaert (110-99–209) and Allison Schieffer (104) and freshman Gretyl Bremer (117) also took part in the two-day event in Lincoln. All four Bulldogs who golfed both rounds improved their scores from the first day of the Nebraska Wesleyan Invite, providing something positive to build upon heading into the most important golf of the season.

Behind individual champion Joana Yanez (79-82–161), Iowa Western Community College (341-340–681) took the team title. Conference schools Nebraska Wesleyan, Morningside, Doane, Midland, Briar Cliff and Hastings also competed on at least one of the two days in Lincoln.

The Bulldogs have just one event left on the spring schedule as both GPAC Qualifiers Nos. 3 and 4 will be played April 26 at Two Rivers in Dakota Dunes S.D. The first women’s GPAC qualifier of the spring was originally set to take place on April 9, but inclement weather postponed the event, meaning 36 holes will be played on April 26.

Bulldog women conclude season with two GPAC qualifier rounds

26 APR 2013

DAKOTA DUNES, S.D. – A postponement of the third GPAC qualifier event forced Concordia women’s golfers and the rest of the conference to play 36 holes on Friday to complete the 2012-13 season. The Bulldogs finished off a trying campaign with a two-round team total of 398-401–799 on Friday, placing them near the bottom of the GPAC standings.

Senior leader Chelsea Peck carded the team’s lowest score on the day with a 92-104–196, but that left her well short of all-conference honors. Peck felt the pressure to play well and move up from her 27th-place positioning entering the day. After garnering all-GPAC last season, the Lincoln native had hoped to vault into the top 10 with a solid outing to close the season.

“Chelsea got off to a great start shooting a 43 on her first nine holes,” Coach Brett Muller said. “Then she had some bad breaks and lost a little bit of confidence. She put a lot of pressure on herself to get back into that all-conference range. It just didn’t go her way.”

Sophomore Melissa McIntosh was right behind Peck after shooting 98-100–198. Sophomore Janelle Hallaert took third for the Bulldogs, shooting 101-98–199. Senior Madison Phillips (107-100–207) and sophomore Allison Schieffer (110-103–213) rounded out the Concordia lineup at the final GPAC qualifiers.

“The four (other than Chelsea) shot about what I expected they would. Chelsea had a rough day and caught some bad breaks. We needed her to play well to have a good day as far as the team score.”

The grueling two-round slate on Friday proved difficult for many fellow GPAC golfers as scores hovered a bit lower than would otherwise be expected. The circumstances tested each golfer beyond sheer talent and mental focus.

“Playing 36 holes today not only took a toll on us but on everybody,” Muller said. “The scores were higher than you would normally see even though the conditions were the best we’ve had all spring.”

Dakota Wesleyan wound up winning the GPAC team title as the Tigers posted the lowest scores in both Friday rounds to strengthen their grip on first place.

Three of the five Bulldogs who golfed on Friday will be back in the fold in 2013-14. Concordia will say goodbye to seniors Chelsea Peck and Madison Phillips.

Deutschman, Peck earn Scholar-Athlete recognition

23 MAY 2013

View 2013 women’s golf Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes

Concordia women’s golf standouts Mackenzie Deutschman and Chelsea Peck have been named 2013 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes, as announced by the NAIA on Thursday. The two seniors also earned the distinction last season.

Deutschman, who hails from North Platte, Neb., majored in early childhood and elementary education. Peck, a native of Lincoln, Neb., majored in accounting and business administration with a finance concentration. Deutschman and Peck were the Bulldogs’ top women’s golfers this past season in terms of lowest average round.

With two women’s golf Scholar-Athletes added to the tally, Concordia now has a total of 44 Scholar-Athletes for the 2012-13 athletics season. Honorees for baseball, softball and track and field have yet to be announced.

In order to be nominated by an institution's head coach, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status to qualify for this honor. A total of 131 NAIA women’s golfers nationally were named Scholar-Athletes.
