Suggestions for music major preparation

Music major preparation

If you wish to be a music major at Concordia, we recommend that you:

  1. Study privately on your major instrument with a professional teacher. Learn, at minimum, all major scales and several pieces from the standard solo repertoire.
  2. Learn to play the piano, at least at a basic level. Piano skills are important no matter what area of music you eventually pursue. While you can take piano lessons at Concordia, an earlier start is always better.
  3. Review the fundamentals of music theory prior to entering Concordia. Decent instruction is available at www.musictheory.net and www.emusictheory.com. A theory placement test is required before you may sign up for the first semester of music theory. We will send you information on the test when you contact us regarding your audition.
