Recording: In the Spring

In the Spring

About the CD

In the Spring is the first recording by the Concordia University Wind Ensemble, William Kuhn, conductor. Each year in the spring, the ensemble undertakes a tour to fulfill, in part, its mission statement:

The primary focus of the Concordia University Wind Ensemble is to use our God-given talents to the best of our ability to praise the Lord through our music and to share those gifts with our audiences.
This CD allows the ensemble to share mission to those who have heard the group in concert and worship settings and extend it to those who have not had this opportunity. It is our hope that, through the music on this CD, you experience the presence of our Lord through one of his great gifts, the gift of music. We pray that this recording will be a blessing to you and all who hear it.

William Kuhn, conductor

William Kuhn, associate professor of music and chair of the music department at Concordia University - Nebraska, brings a rich music and cultural background to the ensembles he conducts. A 1977 graduate of Concordia Teachers College, River Forest, Illinois, he studied with such notable Lutheran musicians as Paul Bunjes, Richard Hillert, Carl Schalk, and Thomas Gieschen. After teaching at Luther High School South in Chicago, Kuhn received a call to teach music at Hong Kong International School (HKIS). In addition to his work at HKIS, Kuhn was minister of music at Church of All Nations - Lutheran.

The 1984-85 school year, Kuhn was awarded a sabbatical to attend Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois where he received his Master of Music degree. There he studied with band legend, John Paynter; choral director, Robert Harris and well-known music education philosophers Bennett Reimer and David Elliott. Kuhn returned to Hong Kong in 1985 and remained there until he received his current call to Concordia University in 1993. He earned his Doctor of Education degree at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln in 2000.

Kuhn is a member of The Music Educators National Conference, The Nebraska Bandmasters Association, and The Association of Lutheran Church Musicians. In 1985 he was inducted into the Alpha chapter of Pi Kappa Lambda, a national music honor society. He is included in Marquis Who's Who in America and Who's Who Among America's Teachers. Kuhn currently shares conducting responsibilities during the summer for Seward's Municipal Band with colleague, John Dorn. At Concordia he teaches - in addition to wind ensemble - world music, conducting, and music education classes. He has given clinics and workshops throughout the country.

Julie Klinge, soloist, Rhapsody in Blue

Julie Klinge began taking Suzuki piano lessons from Lorraine Stumbo at age 5, then soon after began studying under Sister Virginia Gaume, BVM, at Clarke College.

At age 8, Julie competed in the semifinal round of the 1993 Stravinsky Awards international Piano Competition. She received superior plus ratings each of the six years she participated in the National Piano Playing Auditions. Juslie has competed in the Iowa Music Teacher's Association Piano Competition since age 10, and won first place at the district level three times.

In 1997, Julie began studying with Nancy Lease at Clarke College, where she performed several piano recitals. At age 14, she began teaching piano lessons and accompanying the junior and senior choirs at her church. Julie has also accompanied the Dubuque Youth Chorale under the direction of Bill Hesse and performed as a member of the Dubuque Youth Symphony.

In January, 2002, Julie received first place in the Dubuque Youth Symphony Concerto Competition, which earned her an invitation to perform as a soloist with the Dubuque Youth Symphony. In September, 2002, she received an honorable mention rating at the Stravinsky Awards International Piano Competition. Julie also received an honorable mention at the LaCrosse Concerto Competition in January, 2003.

Julie, in her second year at Concordia University, Nebraska, is majoring in Music with an emphasis in piano. She has been actively involved in the Concordia music department, and has accompanied, performed in recitals, and sung in the A Cappella and Singers choirs. During her freshman year, Julie auditioned for the department's honors recitals and was chosen to perform each semester. Since coming to Concordia, Julie has studied under Catherine Herbener.
