Following two years as a graduate assistant, Wes Coomes was promoted to a full-time assistant coach on Feb. 13, 2017. Coomes serves as the head junior varsity coach, special teams coordinator, recruiting coordinator and defensive backs coach.

Coomes worked with a Bulldog defensive backfield that ranked No. 3 in the NAIA in 2015 in terms of passing yards per game (144.0). Concordia also ranked fifth nationally in pass efficiency defense (96.7), led by first team all-conference performer Tarence Roby. The 2016 defense allowed only 182.6 passing yards per game. In his first season (2017) overseeing special teams, Concordia posted national rankings of fifth in kick return yards per attempt (24.1) and 27th in punt return yards per attempt (10.4).

A graduate of Ottawa University, a member of the NAIA’s Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference, Coomes earned his degree in sports administration after transferring from Dodge City Community College in Kansas. The Phllipsburg, Kan., native twice earned all-conference recognition at Ottawa and led the Braves to a pair of NAIA playoff appearances.

Coomes served as a volunteer assistant coach at Phillpsburg High School (Kan.) for 2014-15. He earned his master’s in sports administration from Concordia.
