Jen Davis has been named to the 2003 NAIA All-Region 4 soccer team. The sophomore forward averaged 1.42 goals per game as the women's soccer team had its the first winning season in school history at 10-7

NAIA statistics show that the Concordia women’s soccer team ranked 18th nationally in goals scored per game with an average of 3.35. Jennifer Davis also was in the top 10 of the NAIA nationally, averaging 1.35 goals per game. She also was 11th in the nation with 3.12 individual points per game (goals and assists).

The first winning season in the history of women’s soccer at Concordia University came to an end in double overtime on Oct. 31 at Sioux Center, Iowa. “The Lady Dogs played an outstanding game on Halloween day,” Coach Bill Schranz said of 10-7 Concordia, but the Dordt Defenders avenged an earlier loss to the Bulldogs by beating them, 2-1, in sudden death in the quarterfinals of the GPAC tournament. Dordt attacked in the first minute of the second overtime with Bethany Nishimoto laying the ball in front of the goal and Abbie Soodsma deflecting it in for the win. Dordt now faces Dana, seeded second, and top-seeded Hastings takes on Morningside on Wednesday. “The game was a battle from the start,” Schranz said. “Our game plan was to shut down Bethany Nishimoto (Dordt’s leading scorer) by having Laura Ochs mark her for the entire match. We played the game we wanted to. Laura did a great job, only allowing her one shot on goal and I thought that defensively we really played a solid match.” The Bulldogs capitalized early as a Jen Davis shot found the back of the net at the 16th minute of the first half. “Offensively,” the coach said, “we also played well but just didn’t get the shots off we needed to. Overall, we had a great game and a very successful season” The teams exchanged good scoring opportunities the remainder of the first half without further scoring. The Defenders found the equalizer with 16 minutes left in regulation when the Bulldogs scored an own goal off a Defender corner kick. “We had been playing well defensively even though Dordt had been putting a lot of pressure on us in our defensive half of the field,” Schranz said. A corner kick went over keeper Liz Tiller’s hands and hit one of the Bulldog defenders who was trying to come back to clear the ball and ended up in the back of the net. “Those goals could really destroy your team’s confidence,” he said, “but the women picked it up, stayed focused, and played well the rest of the match.” A long shot into the back of the net by Dordt as regulation ended put a lump in the throat of Bulldog fans, but it was not allowed with the ruling that time had expired. Concordia defeated Dordt, 2-1, with a last-minute goal at Seward on Sept. 27.
