Concordia earns AVCA award for 13th straight year

For the 13th consecutive year, the Concordia University volleyball team has been awarded with the AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) Team Academic Award for 2010-11. A total of 478 teams across the country were recognized this year, setting a new all-time high for this award.
Concordia was one of 30 NAIA teams to earn the award this year. The award honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale.
"I'm very proud of the team for receiving this award for the 13th consecutive year,” said Head Coach Rachel Miller. “Each year the team sets high academic team and individual goals, and this award highlights their dedication to success in the classroom."
Concordia picked to finish 10th in GPAC preseason poll

The Great Plains Athletic Conference released the 2011 volleyball preseason coaches’ poll on Wednesday. Concordia University was picked to finish 10th.
Doane College is picked to win the league title following a 27-8 record and a trip to the NAIA National Tournament in 2010. Doane received 94 points and five first place votes in the poll. Northwestern College, who went 36-2 overall and 16-0 in conference play last year, is picked to finish second with 91 points and four first place votes. Hastings College earned the final two first place votes in the poll and is picked to finish fifth.
Concordia went 11-21 overall with a 1-15 mark in conference play in 2010. Concordia totaled 24 points in this year’s coaches’ poll.

Concordia University went 0-2 on Friday evening at the Red Raider Classic Volleyball Tournament. The Bulldogs suffered a 3-0 loss to Morningside and then lost to Jamestown College by the score of 3-1.
Scores of the Morningside match were 25-10, 25-17 and 25-22. The Bulldogs were led by Amanda Kisker’s (Lincoln, Neb.) nine kills. Ashlea Vaudt (Kalispell, Mont.) added six kills. Alexa Hopping (Sutherland, Neb.) finished with seven set assists, and Carli Smith (Temecula, Calif.) had a team-high seven digs.
Kaeli Austin had a match-high 10 kills to lead the way for Morningside College. Riley Callan and Maggie Vondrak added nine kills and seven kills, respectively, for the Mustangs. Monica Iverson handed out 30 set assists, and Darcy Christensen had 12 digs for Morningside in the victory.
Concordia took the first set against Jamestown College by the score of 25-23, but Jamestown answered with 25-20, 25-20 and 25-17 wins to take the match.
Angela Bruhn (Creston, Neb.) pounded 10 kills to lead the Bulldogs in the loss. Vaudt and Kisker added seven kills apiece, while Smith totaled 12 digs to lead Concordia defensively. Hopping and Kaylie Mellema (Axtell, Neb.) each had 14 set assists.
The Bulldogs will face Valley City State (11 am) and Olivet Nazarene (3 pm) on Saturday to conclude play in the Red Raider Classic Tournament.

Concordia University split two matches in the final day of the Red Raider Classic Volleyball Tournament on Saturday in Iowa. The Bulldogs (1-3) held on for a 3-2 win over Valley City State University in the first match of the day. Olivet Nazarene swept past Concordia by the score of 3-0 in Concordia’s fourth and final match of the tournament.
Concordia won the first two sets against Valley City State but had to earn a 15-13 win in set five to pick up the victory. Scores of the match were 25-20, 25-23, 24-26, 20-25 and 15-13. A total of three players reached double figures in kills to lead a balanced Concordia offensive attack. Amanda Kisker (Lincoln, Neb.) led the way with 11 kills, while Marlee Denton (Fremont, Neb.) and Mariah Schamp (Arvada, Colo.) chipped in with 10 kills apiece. Kayla James (Gibbon, Neb.) handed out 24 set assists, and Alexa Hopping (Sutherland, Neb.) added 16 set assists in the match. Carli Smith (Temecula, Calif.) led the way defensively for Concordia with 31 digs.
The second contest of the day was a different story. Olivet Nazarene picked up the easy win. Scores were 25-22, 25-12 and 25-21. The Bulldogs finished with a .433 attack percentage in the first set, but it was a struggle the rest of the way. Denton paced the Bulldogs with seven kills. Schamp, Kisker and Kaylie Mellema (Axtell, Neb.) all added six kills. Hopping totaled 17 set assists in the Concordia loss.
Concordia travels to Peru State College on August 30 for a 7 p.m. match against the Bobcats.

Concordia University rallied for a 3-2 volleyball win over Peru State on Tuesday evening. The Bulldogs struggled in sets one and three but managed to escape with the win to improve to 2-3 on the year. Scores of the match were 15-25, 25-19, 12-25, 25-21 and 15-12.
The Bulldogs used a balanced offensive attack to pick up the victory. Marlee Denton (Fremont, Neb.), Angela Bruhn (Creston, Neb.) and Ashlea Vaudt (Kalispell, Mont.) all had nine kills to lead the way. Mariah Schamp (Arvada, Colo.) added eight kills and four blocks, while Amanda Abbott (Temecula, Calif.) and Amanda Kisker (Lincoln, Neb.) added four kills apiece.
Alexa Hopping (Sutherland, Neb.) totaled 18 set assists on the night. Kayla James (Gibbon, Neb.) added 14 assists. Ashlea Vaudt added three solo blocks, while Carli Smith (Temecula, Calif.) led the way defensively with 21 digs. Smith has led the team in digs in all five matches so far this season.
Concordia will take part in the Bruin Labor Day Classic Tournament in Bellevue on September 2 and 3. The Bulldogs will play two matches each day before returning home to host Midland University in the GPAC-opener on September 7.

Concordia University dropped two matches at the Bruin Labor Day Classic Volleyball Tournament on Friday in Bellevue. The Bulldogs suffered losses to Baker University and Grand View to drop to 2-5 on the year.
Baker cruised to a 3-0 win in the opening match of the day. Scores were 25-19, 25-17 and 25-13. Savannah Smith and Jasmyn Turner each delivered eight kills to lead the way for Baker. Taryn Brees added seven kills. Jana Boss finished with a match-high 29 set assists, and Brooke Allen led the way defensively with 13 digs.
Amanda Abbott (Temecula, Calif.) finished with a team-best six kills for Concordia in the loss. Marlee Denton (Fremont, Neb.) added five kills, while Kayla James (Gibbon, Neb.) handed out 13 set assists, and Carli Smith (Temecula, Calif.) totaled a match-high 19 digs for the Bulldogs.
Devon Jensen pounded a match-high 17 kills to lead Grand View to the 3-0 win on Friday evening. Scores of the match were 25-18, 25-18 and 25-10. Aly Smith added seven kills, while Jessica Garland and Paige Harris each had 16 set assists for Grand View, who finished with a .341 attack percentage in the win.
Concordia was led by Amanda Kisker’s 12 kills. Kisker, a junior from Lincoln, also totaled 10 digs to finish with a double-double. Denton added five kills for the Bulldogs, who finished with a .066 attack percentage in the loss. Alexa Hopping (Sutherland, Neb.) finished with 15 set assists for Concordia.
The Bulldogs will be back in action on Saturday with two more matches at the Bruin Classic. Concordia faces Viterbo and College of Saint Mary on Saturday.

Amy Braaksma had a match-high 12 kills, and Stacie Hoffman handed out 27 set assists to lead Viterbo to an easy 3-0 win to start the day. Scores of the match were 25-15, 25-14 and 25-21. Hannah Ripp and Katie Flock added nine and eight kills, respectively, while Jordan Blaken totaled a match-high 23 digs in the Viterbo win.
Amanda Kisker (Lincoln, Neb.) finished with a team-best 10 kills to go along with 10 digs, and Amanda Abbott (Temecula, Calif.) added nine kills for the Bulldogs. Kayla James (Gibbon, Neb.) had 14 set assists, and Carli Smith (Temecula, Calif.) led the way defensively for Concordia with 16 digs.

Midland University swept past Concordia in GPAC volleyball on Wednesday evening in Seward. Scores of the match were 25-19, 26-24 and 25-16. The Warriors improved to 6-4 overall (1-0 GPAC). Concordia dropped to 3-7 (0-1 GPAC).
Halie Wewel and Keri Lunz paced the Warriors with nine kills apiece. Ashley Wheeler and Katie Dettmer added eight and seven kills, respectively, for Midland University. Megan Farley had a match-high 32 set assists, and Becca Gradaville totaled 11 digs to lead the Warriors defensively.
Amanda Abbott (Temecula, Calif.) tied Wewel and Lunz with nine kills for Concordia in the loss. Amanda Kisker (Lincoln, Neb.) added six kills, while Kayla James (Gibbon, Neb.) handed out a team-high 10 assists. Bulldogs split in opening night of Rumpke Invite, Coach Miller picks up 100th career win

Concordia University went 1-1 in the opening day of the Georgetown College Rumpke Invite on Friday evening in Georgetown, Ky. The Bulldogs defeated Montreat University (NC) and lost to the hosts from Georgetown College to move to 4-8 on the year. The win over Montreat University was the 100th career win for head coach Rachel Miller.
Coach Miller’s 100th win proved to be extra special, as the Bulldogs battled for an exciting 3-2 win over Montreat. Scores of the match were 25-20, 34-32, 18-25, 9-25 and 15-13. As a team, Concordia totaled 15 and 20 kills, respectively, in the opening two sets of the match. The Bulldogs struggled in the next two sets but came through with nine kills on 17 total attempts in the fifth and final set.
Several players had big nights for the Bulldogs in the win. Amanda Abbott pounded a season and career-high 16 kills to lead the way offensively. Amanda Kisker (Lincoln, Neb.) added a big double-double with 12 kills and a career-high 24 digs, while Kaylie Mellema (Axtell, Neb.) totaled nine kills and seven digs on the night. Angela Bruhn (Creston, Neb.) chipped in with a career-high 20 digs, while Alexa Hopping (Sutherland, Neb.) dished out 28 set assists to go along with 10 digs. Kayla James (Gibbon, Neb.) also reached double figures with 19 assists in the Concordia win.
The hosts from Georgetown College cruised to a 3-0 win over the Bulldogs in the final match of the evening. Scores were 25-11, 25-15 and 25-15. Georgetown finished with a .360 attack percentage and hit .414 and .424, respectively, in the opening two sets of the match. Rachel Eubanks pounded a match-high 16 kills to lead the way, while Liz Gooding handed out 31 set assists for the hosts in the win.
Concordia hit just .032 in the match and was led by Abbott’s eight kills. Kisker added six kills and a match-high 10 digs, while James handed out 11 set assists.
The Bulldogs will conclude play in the Rumpke Invite with two more matches on Saturday. Concordia faces Union College (Ky.) at 12:30 with a match against Grace College (Ind.) to follow at 3:00.

Scores of the win over Union were 25-18, 28-26, 15-25 and 25-18. Amanda Kisker (Lincoln, Neb.) had another double-double with 11 kills and 15 digs to lead the way. Kaylie Mellema (Axtell, Neb.) and Amanda Abbott (Temecula, Calif.) each delivered nine kills. Marlee Denton (Fremont, Neb.) added seven kills for a balanced Bulldog attack. Angela Bruhn (Creston, Neb.) and Allie Kenning (Hebron, Neb.) added 13 and 12 digs, respectively, to chip in for the Bulldogs defensively. Mariah Schamp (Arvada, Colo.) added eight assisted blocks, while Ashlea Vaudt (Kalispell, Mont.) had six assisted blocks. Alexa Hopping (Sutherland, Neb.) totaled 25 set assists in the Bulldog win.
Grace College, who is receiving votes in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, dominated Concordia in the final match of the day. Scores were 25-15, 25-13 and 25-16. Abbott finished with a team-high four kills, and Hopping handed out eight assists. Kennings totaled a team-best eight digs for the Bulldogs in the loss.
Concordia travels to Doane College on September 14.
Abbott and Kisker named to Georgetown All-Tournament Team

Concordia University had two players selected to the Georgetown Rumpke Invite All-Tournament Team this past weekend in Kentucky. Amanda Abbott (Temecula, Calif.) and Amanda Kisker (Lincoln, Neb.) were recognized on the 10-person team.
Abbott finished with a team-best 37 kills on the weekend, as Concordia went 2-2 in the Rumpke Invite. She pounded a season-high 16 kills in Concordia’s 3-2 win over Montreat on the opening night of the tournament.
Kisker totaled 32 kills and had two double-doubles on the weekend. She finished with 12 kills and 24 digs in the win over Montreat and added 11 kills and 15 digs in Concordia’s win over Union College.
Concordia is 5-9 overall and 0-1 in GPAC play so far this year. The Bulldogs travel to No. 11 Doane College on Wednesday evening before returning home to host College of St. Mary on Friday evening at the Walz Human Performance Complex.

Concordia’s upset bid fell just short, as #12 Doane College held on for a 3-2 volleyball win over Concordia on Wednesday evening in Crete. Scores of the match were 25-19, 22-25, 23-25, 25-15 and 17-15. Concordia rallied in the final set and had match point at 15-14, but the Tigers rattled off three straight points to pick up the win. Doane won its 14th straight to move to 17-1 overall (2-0 GPAC) on the year. Concordia slipped to 5-10 overall (0-2 GPAC).
The Tigers held a comfortable lead for much of the first set. The Bulldogs made a late push, but it wasn’t enough as Doane secured the 25-19 win. In set two, Concordia took advantage of some Tiger miscues to jump out to a 22-16 lead. Doane cut the lead to two at 24-22, but the Bulldogs closed out the set to tie the match at 1-1.
Set three went down to the wire. The Bulldogs used a pair of big plays from freshman Mariah Schamp (Arvada, Colo.) to close out the win. A block by Schamp gave Concordia a 24-22 lead and following a point by Doane, Schamp’s kill secured the 25-23 win for the Bulldogs. Doane jumped out to a 14-10 lead in the fourth set. Concordia rallied to tie the match at 14-14, but the Tigers closed the set on an 11-1 run to force a fifth and deciding set.
Just like the rest of the match, the fifth set was close throughout. With the score tied at 8-8, Doane used a 6-3 run to take a 14-11 lead. The Bulldogs rallied with four straight points, however, and took a 15-14 lead. Amanda Kisker (Lincoln, Neb.) had two kills, and an ace serve by Amanda Abbott (Temecula, Calif.) gave Concordia the match point at 15-14. A kill by Doane’s Susan Rollman tied the match at 15 apiece. A Concordia attack error gave Doane their fourth match point, and a block gave the Tigers the 17-15 victory.
Ashley Axmann pounded a match-high 18 kills to lead four players in double figures for the Tigers. Rollman was close behind with 17 kills, while Emily Max chipped in with 13 kills on the night. Terra Andreasen finished with a huge double-double of 12 kills and 18 digs, while Desiree Erikson and Lacey Woitaszewski handed out 35 and 28 set assists, respectively, for Doane in the win.
Abbott totaled 13 kills to lead the way for Concordia in a losing effort. Kisker added 11 kills and eight digs, while Marlee Denton (Fremont, Neb.) also reached double figures with 10 kills. Angela Bruhn (Creston, Neb.) led the way defensively with 17 digs.
Concordia returns home to host College of St. Mary on Friday evening. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Walz Human Performance Complex.

Concordia University bounced back from a tough loss Wednesday night with a 3-0 volleyball win over College of St. Mary on Friday evening in Seward. Scores of the match were 25-23, 25-23 and 25-18. The Bulldogs improved to 6-10 with the win. College of St. Mary dropped to 1-14 with the loss. Before the match, Concordia coach Rachel Miller was honored for picking up her 100th career win earlier this season.
The Bulldogs got off to a slow start and trailed by as many as four in the opening stages of the first set. However, a 5-0 run put the Bulldogs up 14-12. The visiting Flames rallied to reclaim a brief lead and there were multiple ties and lead changes down the stretch. The Bulldogs led 24-20, but the Flames cut the lead to one at 24-23. A kill by Ashlea Vaudt (Kalispell, Mont.) gave Concordia the 25-23 win.
Concordia took the early advantage in set two, but the Flames came back to cut the Bulldog lead to two at 16-14. Following a CSM timeout, Concordia rattled off three straight points to take a 19-14 lead. The Flames again had an answer, however, and a 5-0 run tied the match once again at 19-19. CSM grabbed a 23-20 lead, but Concordia came right back. The Bulldogs tied it at 23-23, and Vaudt again closed things out. The senior had a kill to give Concordia a 24-23 lead, and a solo block by Vaudt secured the 25-23 win and a 2-0 advantage.
College of St. Mary took an early 11-7 lead in set three. The Bulldogs used a 7-1 run to reclaim a lead at 14-12. Concordia pulled away from there and took set three by the score of 25-18.
Marlee Denton (Fremont, Neb.) pounded a match-high 11 kills to lead a balanced Concordia hitting attack. The senior talked about the importance of the win. “We’ve been playing better and with better chemistry,” remarked Denton. “The game against Doane the other night gave us some confidence. We need to believe and know how we are capable of playing.”
Amanda Abbott (Temecula, Calif.) and Amanda Kisker (Lincoln, Neb.) added nine and eight kills, respectively, for the Bulldogs, while Mariah Schamp (Arvada, Colo.) and Vaudt added six kills apiece.
Following the match, Schamp discussed moving forward as a team. “We still need to work hard and improve in several areas, and our intensity on the floor can also be better,” remarked Schamp. “When we keep our intensity up and play with excitement, we’re much better as a unit.”
Alexa Hopping (Sutherland, Neb.) and Kayla James (Gibbon, Neb.) combined for 36 set assists on the night, while Angela Bruhn (Creston, Neb.) led the way defensively with 12 digs.
Ashley Iwanski had a team-high nine kills for College of St. Mary. Kaylee Wallace added seven kills for the Flames.
The Bulldogs return to action with a home match against Nebraska Wesleyan on September 21.

Nebraska Wesleyan picked up a 3-0 GPAC volleyball win over Concordia University on Wednesday evening in Seward. The visiting Prairie Wolves jumped out to big leads in every set. The Bulldogs tried to rally late in the opening two sets, but Wesleyan secured the win. Scores of the match were 25-23, 25-20 and 25-17.
Cody Long, Brittnie Kreikemeier and Karny Kuehl all had seven kills for Wesleyan, who improved to 7-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Hannah Softley added five kills, while Mackenzie Hite had a team-high 15 digs. Cicely Batie led the way defensively with four solo blocks on the night.
Marlee Denton (Fremont, Neb.) had a match-high eight kills for Concordia (6-11, 0-3 GPAC) in a losing effort. Ashlea Vaudt (Kalispell, Mont.) and Amanda Kisker (Lincoln, Neb.) added seven kills apiece, while Kisker also added 12 digs on the night. Angela Bruhn (Creston, Neb.) finished with a match-high 20 digs to pace Concordia defensively. Kayla James (Gibbon, Neb.) handed out 14 set assists and added seven digs for the Bulldogs.
Concordia travels to Dakota Wesleyan on Saturday for a 3 p.m. contest against the Tigers.
Bulldogs earn first GPAC win, 3-2, over Dakota Wesleyan

Concordia picked up its first conference win of the season on Saturday with a 3-2 GPAC volleyball victory over Dakota Wesleyan. Scores of the match were 25-20, 15-25, 25-20, 22-25 and 15-8. The Bulldogs improved to 7-11 overall and 1-3 in the GPAC. Dakota Wesleyan slipped to 7-9 (0-3 GPAC) on the year.
Several Bulldogs contributed both offensively and defensively in the five-set win. Amanda Abbott (Temecula, Calif.) pounded a team-high 13 kills to pace Concordia offensively. Marlee Denton (Fremont, Neb.) and Amanda Kisker (Lincoln, Neb.) also reached double digits in kills. Denton finished with 11 to go alone with one solo block and five assisted blocks, while Kisker had another double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs.
Kayla James (Gibbon, Neb.) also had a big double-double in the Bulldog victory. James finished with a match-high 27 assists to go along with 14 digs. Angela Bruhn (Creston, Neb.) and Allie Kenning (Hebron, Neb.) added 14 digs apiece, while Mariah Schamp (Arvada, Colo.) chipped in with six kills and four assisted blocks.
The Bulldogs had multiple impressive sets offensively. Concordia finished with a .579 attack percentage in the third set, and a .833 attack percentage in the fifth and deciding set lifted the Bulldogs to the win.
Danielle Bird notched a match-high 21 kills and added 13 digs to lead the way for Dakota Wesleyan in the loss. Larissa Veldhuizen added a double-double of 13 kills and 17 digs. Brooke Warne also added 17 digs, while Briana Jung and TyAnn Buddenhagen combined for 45 set assists on the night.
Concordia now returns home for their next four matches. Hastings College comes to Seward on September 27. The JV contest is scheduled for 6 p.m. with the varsity contest to follow at 7:30 at the Walz Human Performance Complex.

Hastings College swept past Concordia in GPAC volleyball on Tuesday evening in Seward. Scores of the match were 25-10, 25-15 and 25-19. Hastings improved to 11-10 overall and 2-3 in GPAC play with the victory. Concordia dropped to 7-12 overall and 1-4 in GPAC play.
The visiting Broncos jumped out to big leads and cruised to wins in the first two sets. Concordia managed to keep things close for much of the third set. The Bulldogs got within one at 16-15, but Hastings College poured it on from there. The Broncos finished with a .398 team attack percentage in the win. In the first two sets, Hastings finished with .435 and .536 attack percentages, respectively.
Shayna Schacher led the way for Hastings College with a game-high 14 kills. Kirsten Nickel added nine kills, while Kendra Schwein and McKayla Gowen delivered seven kills apiece for a balanced Hastings College attack. Haley Beardsley handed out 37 set assists on the night, and Carissa Kinne had a team-best six digs for the Broncos.

Northwestern College picked up a 3-0 GPAC volleyball win over Concordia University on Friday evening in Seward. Scores of the match were 25-22, 25-17 and 25-21. The visiting Raiders moved to 10-12 overall and 3-2 in the GPAC. Concordia slipped to 7-13 overall and 1-5 in conference play with the loss.
Northwestern jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the first set and led by eight at 24-16 before Concordia rallied late. The Bulldogs got within two at 24-22 before Northwestern secured the win. Set two remained close early on, but the Raiders pulled away. Concordia would get as close as seven down the stretch, and Northwestern took the commanding 2-0 lead.
Set three went down to the wire. The Raiders jumped out to a 10-5 lead, but the Bulldogs rallied to tie the match at 10-10. There were multiple ties and lead changes, and Concordia held its final lead of the set at 21-20. However, back-to-back ace serves by Heather Goehring reclaimed the lead for Northwestern at 22-21. The Raiders took the next three points and secured the 3-0 win.
Megan Hutson and Kate Boersma each delivered nine kills to pace Northwestern offensively. Rylee Hulstein and Jennie Jansen added seven and six kills, respectively, for the Red Raiders. Alexis Bart and Goehring each had a team-high 14 digs, while Hutson and Jaci Moret each added 13 digs for Northwestern defensively.

Morningside College picked up a 3-1 GPAC volleyball win over Concordia on Saturday afternoon in Seward. The visiting Mustangs improved to 15-4 overall and 5-1 in conference play with the victory. Concordia dropped to 7-14 overall and 1-6 in the GPAC.
Scores of the match were 25-15, 20-25, 25-13 and 26-24. Concordia threatened to take the match to a fifth set. In the fourth set, the Bulldogs led 22-19 and then had a set point at 24-22. However, the Mustangs rattled off four straight points to secure the victory.
Maggie Vondrak had a match-high 16 kills to pace Morningside College. Briana Schaeuble added 13 kills, and Riley Callan also reached double digits with 10 kills. Anastasia Ott delivered six kills and nine assisted blocks, while Kaeli Austin had seven kills and 16 digs. Monica Iverson handed out 45 set assists for Morningside in the win.

Concordia University overcame a slow start to pick up a 3-1 volleyball win over York College on Tuesday evening in Seward. York College took set one, but the Bulldogs responded well. Scores of the match were 21-25, 25-14, 25-21 and 25-22. Concordia improved to 8-14 on the year. York College fell to 13-9.
The Bulldogs held a lead late in the first set. Concordia led 20-18, but York finished the set on a 7-1 scoring run to take the early advantage. The Bulldogs took an early 3-0 lead in set two. A rotation error cost the visiting Panthers a few points, and Concordia jumped out a 7-3 advantage. The Bulldogs led comfortably the rest of the way and evened the match at a set apiece.
York held the lead for much of the third set. The Panthers still led by two at 18-16, but Concordia rattled off seven straight points to led 23-18. The Bulldogs return to conference play this weekend with a road match at Mount Marty College on Saturday.

Concordia University rallied for a 3-2 GPAC volleyball win over Mount Marty College on Saturday afternoon in Yankton. Scores of the match were 30-28, 23-25, 16-25, 25-22 and 15-11. The Bulldogs moved to 9-14 overall with a 2-6 mark in the GPAC. Mount Marty fell to 5-16 overall with a 1-7 conference record.
Amanda Kisker (Lincoln, Neb.) led the way with a double-double of 18 kills and 11 digs. Her 18 kills was a match-high. Marlee Denton (Fremont, Neb.) added eight kills, while Ashlea Vaudt (Kalispell, Mont.) and Amanda Abbott (Temecula, Calif.) added seven kills apiece. Alexa Hopping (Sutherland, Neb.) handed out 26 assists and added 10 digs, and Kayla James (Gibbon, Neb.) added 14 assists on the day. Carli Smith (Temecula, Calif.) had 15 digs to lead the way defensively for the Bulldogs.
Emily Schreur had a team-best 12 kills for Mount Marty. Carlie Lambert added nine kills for the Lancers.

Bulldogs fall on the road to Midland University, 3-1

Midland University claimed a 3-1 GPAC volleyball win over Concordia University on Wednesday evening in Fremont. Scores of the match were 25-20, 23-25, 25-15 and 25-19. The Warriors snapped a 2-game losing streak to improve to 15-7 overall and 7-2 in GPAC play. Concordia had its 2-game winning streak snapped and slipped to 9-15 overall and 2-7 in conference play.
The Warriors jumped out to a 19-13 advantage in the first set. From there, Concordia pulled within four on multiple occasions, but Midland went on to win the set by the score of 25-20.
Midland University again led for much of the second set. The Warriors led by five at 18-13, but Concordia rallied. An ace by Amanda Kisker (Lincoln, Neb.) pulled the Bulldogs within one at 18-17, and Concordia finally took the lead at 21-20. The Bulldogs had two set points at 24-22. A kill by Amanda Abbott (Temecula, Calif.) secured the 25-23 win for Concordia.
The host Warriors cruised to the win in set three. Midland jumped out to a quick 14-6 lead. Concordia would get no closer than six the rest of the way, and Midland pulled away for the 25-15 win and 2-1 match advantage.
Concordia started the fourth set off strong and took an early 4-2 advantage. Midland quickly responded and claimed a 9-6 lead to force a Concordia timeout. The Bulldogs had an answer, however, and reclaimed the lead at 13-11 to force Midland into a timeout. The Warriors responded out of the timeout and jumped back in front by the score of 18-16. That was as close as Concordia would get down the stretch, and the Warriors took the match with a 25-19 win.
The Warriors were led by a trio of freshmen. Ashley Wheeler pounded a match-high 16 kills in the contest. Keri Lunz added 13 kills, and setter Megan Farley handed out 46 set assists on the night.
Concordia was led by Kisker’s 10 kills. Alexa Hopping (Sutherland, Neb.) had 16 set assists, and Carli Smith (Temecula, Calif.) had 15 digs to pace Concordia defensively.
The Bulldogs continue GPAC play on the road at Nebraska Wesleyan on October 19.

Nebraska Wesleyan rallied to defeat Concordia in GPAC volleyball on Wednesday evening in Lincoln. Concordia held a 2-1 match lead before dropping the final two sets of the contest. Scores of the match were 30-28, 21-25, 21-25, 25-17 and 15-9. The Prairie Wolves improved to 13-9 overall and evened their conference record at 5-5. Concordia slipped to 9-16 overall with a 2-8 conference mark.
Wesleyan was led by Cicely Batie’s 14 kills. Batie added six assisted blocks on the night. Hannah Softley and Katelyn Walsh added 13 kills apiece for the Prairie Wolves. Caitlin Anderson had a match-best 53 set assists, while three players reached double figures in digs. Mackenzie Hite totaled a team-high 15 digs. Caitlin Anderson finished with 13 digs, while Mackenzie Ashton chipped in with 10 digs.

Concordia University rallied for a 3-2 GPAC volleyball win over Briar Cliff University on Saturday in Sioux City. Scores of the match were 25-19, 21-25, 14-25, 26-24 and 18-16. The Bulldogs improved to 10-16 on the year (3-8 GPAC). Briar Cliff slipped to 10-16 (6-6 GPAC).
Marlee Denton (Fremont, Neb.) pounded a match-high 15 kills in the Bulldog victory. Amanda Kisker (Lincoln, Neb.) added a big double-double of 12 kills and a team-high 19 digs. Ashlea Vaudt (Kalispell, Mont.) added eight kills and four assisted blocks. Mariah Schamp (Arvada, Colo.) totaled six kills and six assisted blocks, while Amanda Abbott (Temecula, Calif.) also delivered six kills for the Bulldogs. Defensively, Carli Smith (Temecula, Calif.) had 17 digs. Alexa Hopping (Sutherland, Neb.) handed out a team-best 31 set assists and also added 10 digs on the night.
A trio of Briar Cliff players reached double figures in kills. Brooke Maguire had a team-best 13 kills. Kally Iedema and Amber Skoglund each added double-doubles for the Chargers. Iedema totaled 11 kills and 22 digs, while Skoglund chipped in with 11 kills and 13 digs. Liz Krog had a match-high 24 digs on the night, while Erin Frank totaled a match-best 49 set assists to go along with 14 digs.
Concordia hosts three matches this coming week. The Bulldogs host Doane College on October 25 on Dig Pink Night at the Walz Human Performance Complex. Dakota Wesleyan University comes to Seward on October 28 on Senior Night, and Dordt College comes to town on October 29 on Parents’ Day at the Walz Complex.
Rollman and Axmann lead Doane past Concordia, 3-0

The combination of Susan Rollman and Ashley Axmann proved to be too much, as Doane College picked up a 3-0 GPAC volleyball win over Concordia on Tuesday evening in Seward. The duo combined for 26 kills and five blocks, as Doane improved to 24-5 overall and 9-4 in conference play. Concordia slipped to 10-17 overall and 3-9 in the GPAC.
Scores of the match were 27-25, 25-20 and 25-17. Concordia kept things close through the early stages of the first set. The Tigers led by five on two occasions with the last at 20-15. The Bulldogs rallied, however, and a kill by Amanda Kisker (Lincoln, Neb.) tied the score at 22-22. There were multiple ties and lead changes down the stretch. However, a Concordia net violation gave Doane a 27-26 lead, and a kill by Axmann gave the Tigers the first set win.
The Bulldogs came out strong once again in the second set and led by as many as four at 14-10, forcing an early timeout by Doane. However, the Tigers rallied, and a pair of kills by Rollman reclaimed the lead for Doane at 18-17. From there, the Tigers pulled away for the 25-20 win.
Doane had an easier time in the third set. Aside from some early service errors, which gave Concordia their first three points of the set, the Tigers jumped out to a quick 13-7 lead. The Bulldogs pulled within three at 16-13, but the Tigers pulled away and secured the victory.
The visiting Tigers finished with a .352 team attack percentage in the win. Rollman had a huge night, finishing with a match-high 15 kills on 20 total attempts. Axmann added 11 kills on the night, while Emily Max chipped in with nine kills for the Tigers. Desiree Erikson handed out 41 set assists, and Terra Andreasen finished with a team-best 10 digs.
Amanda Abbott (Temecula, Calif.) finished with a team-high 10 kills for Concordia, who totaled a .173 team attack percentage in the loss. Kisker added nine kills and a team-best 10 digs. Ashlea Vaudt (Kalispell, Mont.) and Marlee Denton (Fremont, Neb.) added seven and six kills, respectively, for the Bulldogs. Alexa Hopping (Sutherland, Neb.) and Kayla James (Gibbon, Neb.) each handed out 15 set assists on the night.
Concordia hosts Dakota Wesleyan on Friday evening at the Walz Human Performance Complex. It will be senior night, as Concordia will honor Alexa Hopping, Marlee Denton, Kaylie Mellema and Ashlea Vaudt for their contributions to the Bulldog Volleyball program. Matches are scheduled for 6 and 7:30.

Concordia needed five sets to earn a 3-2 GPAC volleyball win over Dakota Wesleyan on Friday evening in Seward. The Bulldogs came back from a huge deficit in set four to force a fifth and deciding set. Scores of the match were 22-25, 25-17, 24-26, 25-23 and 15-10. With the win, Concordia improved to 11-17 overall and 4-9 in the GPAC. Dakota Wesleyan dropped to 7-23 overall and remained winless in conference play at 0-12.
The visiting Tigers led from start to finish in the first set. DWU led by as many as seven (15-8), but Concordia rallied to pull within one at 21-20 on a kill by Amanda Kisker (Lincoln, Neb.). The Tigers pulled away, however, and a kill by Rachel Tinklenberg gave the Tigers the 25-22 victory.
DWU took an early 6-4 lead in the second set, but Concordia quickly responded with a 7-1 run to grab an 11-7 lead. The Bulldogs continued to pull away throughout the rest of the set, and an Ashlea Vaudt (Kalispell, Mont.) kill secured the 25-17 victory for Concordia.

A DWU attack error and a kill by Denton (Fremont, Neb.) increased the Bulldog lead to 23-21. A block by Tinklenberg and Elizabeth Humiston pulled the Tigers back within one at 23-22. Concordia reclaimed a 2-point lead, but a serving error once again cut the Concordia lead to one at 24-23. Schamp closed the door on the set with another kill for Concordia, and the match was sent to a fifth and deciding set.

Kisker led the way with a team-high 15 kills to go along with 14 digs. Vaudt and Denton also had big nights on their Senior Night. Vaudt had 12 kills to go with two solo blocks and an assisted block. Denton chipped in with 10 kills and three solo blocks. Schamp added nine kills on the night for a balanced Bulldog attack. Alexa Hopping (Sutherland, Neb.), another one of the Bulldog seniors, handed out 26 set assists and added 11 digs. Kayla James (Gibbon, Neb.) had 23 set assists on the night. Defensively, Carli Smith (Temecula, Calif.) had a team-high 17 digs, while Angela Bruhn (Creston, Neb.) added 10 digs.
Tinklenberg had a match-high 17 kills to lead the way for the Tigers in a losing effort. Bird also reached double figures with 11 kills. Briana Jung had 22 set assists, while Warne finished with a match-high 26 digs for the Tigers.
Concordia hosts Dordt College on Saturday in the final home game of the season for the Bulldogs. It will be Parents Day at the Walz Human Performance Complex. Matches are scheduled for 1:30 and 3.
Dordt College avoids upset, rallies for 3-2 win over Concordia

For the second straight day, Concordia University went to five sets in GPAC volleyball. The Bulldogs rallied for a 3-2 win over Dakota Wesleyan on Friday evening. Things were different on Saturday, as Dordt College rallied for a 3-2 win. The Bulldogs took the first two sets but were unable to close out the match. Scores were 21-25, 18-25, 25-16, 25-18 and 15-13.
The Bulldogs (11-18, 4-10 GPAC) jumped out to a big lead in the first set. Concordia opened the set on a 10-2 run and held a comfortable lead for a good portion of the set. The Defenders (15-14, 9-4 GPAC) rallied to within three at 23-20 on a kill by April Solsma, but kills by Amanda Kisker (Lincoln, Neb.) and Mariah Schamp (Arvada, Colo.) secured the 25-21 win for Concordia.
The second set remained close in the early stages. However, the Bulldogs used a 3-0 run to grab a 16-11 lead. Dordt pulled within four on two occasions, but Concordia pulled away for the 25-18 win and 2-0 match advantage.
Set three again was close in the early stages. Concordia kept it close and trailed by just two at 17-15. The Defenders rattled off five straight points, however, to take a 22-15 lead and force a Bulldog timeout. Concordia got a kill by Ashlea Vaudt (Kalispell, Mont.) following the timeout, but Dordt scored the next three points for the 25-16 win.
Dordt College used another late run to take set four. The combination of Katelyn Schuller and Danae Geels proved to be too much down the stretch. Concordia pulled within two at 18-16. Schuller pounded three kills, while Geels added a kill and solo block, and the Defenders tied the match at two sets apiece.
The fifth and final set started promising for Concordia. The Bulldogs held leads of 2-0 and 3-1 early on, but Dordt scored the next four points to grab a 5-3 advantage. Dordt pulled away from there and held a 14-9 advantage at one point. The Bulldogs attempted to rally, scoring the next four points to pull within one at 14-13. A kill by Geels gave Dordt the 15-13 win and 3-2 match victory.
Geels had 13 kills to pace Dordt College in the win. Schuller added 12 kills, and Lindsey Moerman delivered 10 kills in the match. Loy Griess and Kiley Velgersdynk added nine and seven kills, respectively, for the Defenders. Jessica De Stigter handed out 23 set assists, and Jocelyn Bousema had a match-best 16 digs for Dordt College.
Kisker pounded 16 kills to lead the way for Concordia offensively. The junior also added 11 digs for another double-double. Schamp and Amanda Abbott (Temecula, Calif.) added 12 kills apiece. Marlee Denton (Fremont, Neb.) added eight kills, and Vaudt chipped in with seven kills on the day. Alexa Hopping (Sutherland, Neb.) had 28 set assists, while Carli Smith (Temecula, Calif.) had a team-best 13 digs for the Bulldogs defensively.
Concordia concludes regular season play with games at Hastings College (Nov. 3) and Northwestern College (Nov. 5).

Hastings College cruised to a 3-0 GPAC volleyball win over Concordia on Thursday evening in Hastings. Scores of the match were 25-15, 25-20 and 25-13.
Amanda Kisker (Lincoln, Neb.) and Ashlea Vaudt (Kalispell, Mont.) combined for 13 kills on the night for the Bulldogs. Kisker had seven to go along with 12 digs, and Vaudt added six kills and two blocks on the night. Alexa Hopping had 13 set assists, and Carli Smith (Temecula, Calif.) had a team-best 14 digs on the night for the Bulldogs.
Concordia concludes the regular season at Northwestern College on Saturday.

Northwestern College picked up a 3-0 GPAC volleyball win over Concordia on Saturday in Orange City. Scores of the match were 25-21, 25-11 and 25-13. The host Raiders improved to 18-15 overall and 11-5 in conference play. Concordia dropped its third straight to finish the regular season at 11-20 overall with a 4-12 GPAC mark.
Jaci Moret had a match-high 10 kills for Northwestern. Kate Boersma added nine kills and nine total blocks in the match. Kaitlin Floerchinger had 27 set assists, and Alexis Bart totaled 16 digs to lead Northwestern defensively.
Amanda Kisker (Lincoln, Neb.) tied for match-high honors with 10 kills. Kisker added 12 digs for the double-double. Amanda Abbott (Temcula, Calif.) finished with five kills, but no one else had more than two kills for the Bulldogs. Alexa Hopping (Sutherland, Neb.) led Concordia with eight set assists, and Carli Smith had a team-high 16 digs.
The Bulldogs will compete in the GPAC Tournament, which begins on November 8.
Bulldogs suffer 3-1 loss to Morningside in GPAC Volleyball Tournament

Morningside College opened GPAC Tournament play with a 3-1 win over Concordia University on Tuesday night in Sioux City. The host Mustangs advanced to the conference semi-finals with the win, while Concordia’s season came to an end at 11-21. Scores of the match were 25-23, 25-19, 20-25 and 25-19.
The Mustangs jumped out to a 17-7 lead in the opening set, but Concordia didn’t go quietly. The Bulldogs came all the way back to tie the set at 22-22. The teams traded points to make the score 23-23. Maggie Vondrak had a kill to give the Mustangs the advantage, and a Bulldog attacking error gave Morningside the first set victory.
The second set again remained close in the early stages. The Bulldogs led by two at 13-11 and 14-12, but Morningside scored the next three points to take a 15-14 advantage. With the set tied at 16-16, Morningside rattled off four straight points to force a Concordia timeout. The Mustangs pulled away from there and secured the 25-19 win.
Concordia came back with a solid third set. The Bulldogs led from start to finish. Concordia led by as many as six at 14-8. Morningside cut into the lead and trailed by just two at 16-14. However, the Bulldogs rebuilt the lead to five at 22-17, and a kill by Ashlea Vaudt (Kalispell, Mont.) gave the Bulldogs the 25-20 set three win.
Morningside seized early control in the fourth set. The set was tied 4-4, but the Mustangs used a 12-2 run to take a 16-6 lead. The Bulldogs rallied to cut the lead to five on multiple occasions, but Morningside closed out the match with the 25-19 win.
The trio of Briana Schaeuble, Maggie Vondrak and Anastasia Ott led the way for the Mustangs in the victory. Schaeuble pounded 15 kills and totaled eight blocks on the night. Vondrak had 11 kills, and Ott added 10 in the Mustang victory. Monica Iverson had 45 set assists, and Darcy Christensen finished with a match-high 21 digs.
Concordia was led by Amanda Kisker’s match-high 16 kills. Kisker added nine digs on the night. Mariah Schamp (Arvada, Colo.) had eight kills, while both Amanda Abbott (Temecula, Calif.) and Marlee Denton (Fremont, Neb.) added seven kills on the night. Alexa Hopping (Sutherland, Neb.) handed out 25 set assists, and Carli Smith (Temecula, Calif.) led the way defensively with 20 digs.
Kisker and Denton earn honorable mention All-GPAC honors

Concordia University’s Amanda Kisker and Marlee Denton are honorable mention selections on the 2011 GPAC Volleyball All-Conference Team which was announced on Wednesday.
Kisker (Lincoln, Neb.) had a strong junior season at the outside hitter position for the Bulldogs. She easily led the team with 315 kills on the year (2.56 kills per set), and she also led the team with 38 service aces. Kisker was second on the team with 305 digs, and she added 34 total blocks.
Denton (Fremont, Neb.) closed out her Bulldog career with a solid senior season. She was third on the team with 211 kills (1.74 kills per set). Denton was also third on the team in total blocks with 68.
Concordia finished the 2011 season with an overall record of 11-21. The Bulldogs were 4-12 in GPAC play.
Six Bulldogs named as 2011 scholar-athletes

The NAIA released its 2011 volleyball Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes on Friday. A total of 392 student-athletes received the honor this year.
Concordia University placed six on this year’s list. Seniors Kaylie Mellema (Axtell, Neb.) and Ashlea Vaudt (Kalispell, Mont.) received the honor. Juniors Angela Bruhn (Creston, Neb.), Amanda Kisker (Lincoln, Neb.), Kim Miller (Mason City, Iowa) and Lindsea Vaudt (Kalispell, Mont.) also were recognized from the 2011 Bulldog squad.
Student-athletes are nominated by their school’s head coach and must maintain a minimum grade points average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved junior academic status in order to qualify.
