Men’s tennis drops 5-4 decision to CUW at Concordia Invitational

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The tennis version of the Concordia Invitational opened up on Friday in St. Louis, Mo. Concordia Wisconsin has already clinched the event’s title after eking out a 5-4 win over the Concordia Nebraska men’s tennis squad on Friday afternoon. The Bulldogs, who play two more times in St. Louis on Saturday, slipped to 5-3 overall.

The Falcons (4-10) of Mequon, Wis., got victories at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles before splitting in singles on the way to earning their second win of the day at the Concordia Invite.

The Bulldogs were on the right side of two three-set singles matches – wins by Javier Moreno at No. 2 and by Jonathan Heckman at No. 6. Tight bouts occurred up and down the lineup in a closely contested match throughout.

The Concordia team from The Cornhusker State surprisingly fell at both the 2 and 3 doubles positions – spots that had a combined mark of 10-4 entering the weekend. The No.2 pair of Moreno and Patricio Esquivel (GPAC player of the week) fell by an 8-4 score while the No. 3 combo of Jonathan Douglas and Mike McCartney dropped a narrow 8-6 decision.

Senior Joel Kaldahl was a perfect 2-0 on the day, picking up wins at No. 4 singles and No. 1 doubles along with fellow senior Nathan Wingfield.

The Bulldogs return to action in St. Louis on Saturday with two more matches. They will take on Concordia Seminary (Mo.) at 9 a.m. before finishing the weekend road trip against Greenville College (Ill.) at 1 p.m.
