Men's team matches women's feat, downs Nebraska Wesleyan, 6-3
The Concordia Univeristy, Nebraska, men's tennis team defeated Nebraska Wesleyan, 6-3, in a Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) matchup in Seward, Neb., on Thursday, April 19.
With the win, the Bulldogs moved to 6-7 on the season and 1-1 in GPAC action. Nebraska Wesleyan, meanwhile, fell to 3-14 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
The Bulldogs got out to a 2-1 lead as the match began by taking the second and third doubles points. Seniors Danny Frastaci (Parma, Ohio) and Jeremy Jank (Hastings, Neb.) edged Jordan Barrett and Seth Shimerda, 8-6 at No. 2. Earlier the sophomore tandem of Michael McCartney (Davenport, Iowa) and Joe Vanderveld (Lake Ozark, Mo.) cruised to an 8-3 win over Nebraska Wesleyan's Carey Haefele and Seth Peters.
In singles play, Concordia sealed the match with three straight set victories. Frastaci earned the point at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-1 over Barrett. Moments later, junior Cole Egger (Galva, Iowa) defeated Haefele, 6-1, 6-2. Freshman Jonathan Heckman (Canton, S.D.) gave the Bulldogs the victory with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) win at the fourth singles slot over Haefele. Before the match concluded sophomore Nathan Wingfield (Greendale, Wis.) tacked on a three set win, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 1-0 (10-5), over the Prairie Wolves' Ryan McCarty.
Concordia returns to the court for two matches on Saturday, April 21, as the Bulldogs play Briar Cliff and Morningside on a neutral court in Omaha, Neb.
