Bulldogs' women's team falls to Hastings in GPAC Tournament opener

The Concordia University, Nebraska, women's tennis team suffered a 5-1 loss to Hastings on Friday, May 4 in the opening round of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Tournament in Fremont, Neb.

The fifth seeded Bulldogs dug themselves a hole in doubles competition, dropping all three matches. As a result, Concordia needed to win five of the six singles matches to advance past the fourth seeded, Hastings Broncos.

Junior Mikaela Barz (San Antonio, Texas) got Concordia off to a strong start with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Sarah Zach at the No. 5 slot, but losses by freshmen Elizabeth Kjellsen (Centennial, Colo.) and Abby Urbanek (Crete, Neb.) at the third and sixth positions ended Concordia's chances.

The loss ended Concordia's season at 7-10 overall, while Hastings advanced to the second round of the GPAC Tournament with a 7-8 record.  Hastings also defeated Concordia in their GPAC conference match earlier this season as the Broncos won that matchup, 8-1, on April 25.
