Bulldogs drop two at York

The Concordia University, Nebraska, baseball squad gave a valiant effort but dropped two to York College (RV)  on Tuesday, March 27.

Concordia fell 6-1 in the opener and was downed 5-3 in the nightcap.

Following Tuesday's action, the Bulldogs are 15-13 this season.  York, meanwhile, moved to 20-10.

Game One:  York 6, Concordia 1

The Bulldogs got on the board first in the top of the second as freshman Daniel Wilkerson (Santa Fe, Texas) blasted the first pitch he saw over the right field wall to give Concordia a 1-0 lead.

Unfortunately Concordia only managed one hit the rest of the way as York tied the game with a run in the second, added two runs in the fourth and fifth, then one more in the sixth.

Senior Paul Rowlett (Lodgepole, Neb.) took the loss (0-1) for Concordia.  Rowlett came on in a relief role in the third inning.  He allowed four runs on five hits in 2.2 innings.

York's Cody Brumbaugh nabbed the win (3-0), allowing one run on two hits in 4.2 innings.   Matt Blaemire picked up his first save of the season with 2.1 innings of flawless relief.

Game Two:  York 5, Concordia 3

Game two saw York take control early with four runs in the bottom of the first.  Concordia chipped away with single runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings to make it 4-3, but the Bulldogs were unable to overcome the early deficit.

Senior Zak Goodrich (Lutz, Fla.) stroked a two-out RBI double to drive in Concordia's first run in the second.  In the fourth inning it was Goodrich again as he plated sophomore Joe Brandbenburg (Waconia, Minn.) via an RBI ground out.

Concordia's final run came on an RBI single by junior Kyle Ivanoff (Tucson, Ariz.)  in the fifth.

Junior Nick Thill (Littleton, Colo.) suffered the loss (2-1) allowing four runs (three earned) in one inning.

York starter Dustin Wisener moved to 3-1 on the year, limiting Concordia to two runs on seven hits in four innings.  Gene Felise tossed a perfect ninth to earn his first save of the year.

Concordia returns to action on Saturday, March 31 as the Bulldogs open Great Plain Athletic Conference play by hosting Briar Cliff University in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
