Bulldogs continue winning ways, sweep doubleheader from Roosevelt, 9-3 & 6-5

The Concordia University, Nebraska, baseball left for a spring break trip to Florida on March 9.  Since leaving the Bulldogs are 4-1 after sweeping a doubleheader from Roosevelt University, 9-3 and 6-5, on Tuesday, March 13.

Following Tuesday's action the Bulldogs are 10-9 on the season, while Roosevelt fell to 0-9.

Game One: Concordia 9, Roosevelt 3

The Bulldogs took advantage of early opportunities to build a 7-0 lead in the opening two innings.  Concordia got three unearned run in the top of the first on two hit batters, a single and a costly error.  The Bulldogs added four more in the second on an RBI single from senior Martin Rodriguez (Tucson, Ariz.), a two-run single off the bat of freshman Andrew Yerrell (Santa Fe, Texas) and an RBI single via senior Brandon Pflug (Ft. Morgan, Colo.).

Freshman starter Michael Hodges (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and three relievers easily made the lead stand up as Hodges (1-1) allowed just three runs (one earned) on six hits and one walk in four innings for the win.

Yerrell finished the contest 2-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored.

Game Two: Concordia 6, Roosevelt 5

The finale followed a similar script as Concordia scored early by taking advantage of Laker errors. This time Creighton got one in the first, then the Bulldogs plated five in the second courtesy of five hits and two Roosevelt errors.

One costly error opened the Concordia floodgates as the first four Bulldogs to bat in the second reached base and eventually scored.   Senior Anthony Flores (Craig, Colo.) started things off with a bunt single.  Junior Kyle Ivanoff (Tucson, Ariz.) attempted to sacrifice Flores to second, resulting in a wild throw that left both runners safe.  Junior Ray Finley (Tucson, Ariz.) and senior Josh Nance (Brighton, Colo.) followed with RBI singles to make it 3-0.  Two outs later, Yerrell, who reached on an error in the first inning, benefitted from another wild throw to plate both Concordia runners.  Yerrell eventually scored on an RBI single by Pflug, extending Concordia's lead to 6-0.

Roosevelt plated four runs of their own in the top of the third on four hits and two walks, but the Bulldogs bullpen shut the door the rest of the way.  Six Concordia relievers combined to toss 4.1 innings of one run relief.

Junior Jordan Ahl (Fairbury, Neb.) earned the victory (1-0) with a one-hit fourth inning and senior Josh Anderson notched his second save of the season allowing just an unearned run in the seventh.

Concordia has two more matchups while in Florida, up next is a doubleheader with Huntington University (Ind.) on Friday, March 16 at 12 p.m.
