Bulldogs claim third straight win, 2-1 over Viterbo
Behind a stellar performance from senior Steven Ivanoff (Tucson, Arizona) the Concordia University, Nebraska, baseball team defeated Viterbo 2-1 on Saturday, March 10.
The win pushed the Bulldogs record to 7-8, while Viterbo fell to 2-7.
Ivanoff delivered a complete game on the mound, allowing just one run on seven hits for the victory (2-2). His effort however was matched step for step by the Hawks' Chris Dunn.
Dunn limited the Bulldogs to just three hits, surrendering two runs (one earned) in 6.2 innings.
Scoreless entering the bottom of the fifth, Concordia head coach Jeremy Geidel manufactured a run with speed. Senior Zak Goodrich (Lutz, Fla.) opened the inning by drawing a base on balls. Goodrich swiped second, then senior Martin Rodriguez (Tucson, Ariz.) dropped a sacrifice bunt down the first base line to put Goodrich at third with one out. The next batter, freshman Andrew Yerrell (Santa Fe, Texas) made the most of the opportunity, lifting a sacrifice fly to right to bring home Goodrich.
In the top of the seventh, Viterbo knotted the game at 1-1 on an RBI single by Taylor Reinhardt.
Fortunately the Bulldogs were the designated home team in this neutral site clash. In the bottom half of the inning, Rodriguez smacked a one-out double into left-center and scored on an error off the bat of Yerrell.
Concordia will be back in action later today as the Bulldogs face Trinity Christian College in a split doubleheader.
