Bulldogs improve by 14 strokes on day 2 of Wild West Invite

GOTHENBURG, Neb. – Despite another round affected by strong wind gusts, the Concordia University men’s golf team cut 14 strokes off its total from the previous outing on day two of the Wild West Invite held in Gothenburg, Neb., on Monday. The Bulldogs finished the event with a two-round score of 341-327–668, putting them in sixth place among the 11 teams.

Individually, sophomore Reid Wiebe held onto a top-10 finish by shooting a 79 on Monday, one day after carding an 81. He highlighted the efforts of nine different Bulldogs who took the par-72 Wild Horse Golf Course.

“It was good to see Reid back in the 70s and get the ninth-place medal,” head coach Brett Muller said. “And to see everyone bounce back after a tough day one really showed that we took a step in the right direction. Our team score is still a little higher than it needs to be. Right now we’re missing that guy who shoots in the 72 to 75 range that we had the first semester.”

Each of Concordia’s golfers improved their scores compared in the second go-round at the Wild West Invite. Freshman Russell Otten (84-83–167) came in next behind Wiebe with a 23rd-place finish. The remainder of the Concordia ‘A’ lineup included sophomore Jared Knoepfel (87-83–170; 26th) and freshmen Payton DeVencenty (89-82–171; 28th) and Tyler Ehresman (89-85–174; T-30th).

Four other Bulldogs competed as part of the ‘B’ team: juniors Garrett Suchanek (92-82–174), Brock Colclasure (90-86–176) and Sam Simonson (92-84–176) and sophomore Court Croghan (94-84–178).

Wiebe, a native of Sutton, Neb., has now turned in nine rounds of sub-80 scores during his first season as a Bulldog. He entered the tournament averaging a 77.7 per 18 holes.

Two tournaments remain on the 2015 schedule: The Bulldog-Tiger Cup on Saturday, April 25 and GPAC Qualifier No. 4 slated for Monday, April 27.
