Hinckfoot and Kortze named 2013-14 Concordia senior athletes of the year
SEWARD, Neb. – Track and field athletes Ben Hinckfoot (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Sarah Kortze (Rockford, Ill.) have been named the 2013-14 Concordia Male and Female Senior Athletes of the Year. Hinckfoot and Kortze are this year’s award winners based on a vote held by members of the Concordia University athletic department.
“These individuals fully represent the core values of Bulldog athletics,” Director of Athletics Devin Smith said. “Both Ben and Sarah exemplify positive character traits in terms of their Christian faith, leadership, citizenship, and work ethic that exhibit the ideals of our university. These two student-athletes are fierce competitors who have influenced their coaches, teammates, peers and opponents in a positive manner. Not only were Ben and Sarah high achievers as athletes, they were top-notch students who I know will be successful as they move on to the next stages of their lives.”
According to cross country and track and field head coach Kregg Einspahr, it was the work ethic of Hinckfoot and Kortze that took them to another level.
“Ben and Sarah were both very hard workers who really developed their abilities to their fullest,” Einspahr said. “Both were very dominant athletes at the GPAC level in their specialty events. But neither began their careers in that position. They had to continually work each year to reach that level. Both did a lot of the extra things that helped take them from being very good athletes to outstanding athletes. Sarah's win at the GPAC cross country championships in 2012 was perhaps the most dominating win I have seen at the meet in 20 years.”
Hinckfoot is the fifth track athlete over the past six years to earn Concordia Male Senior Athlete of the Year accolades. He won a GPAC title in the 400 meter hurdles and also claimed All-America honors in the 110 and 400 meter hurdles this past outdoor season. The 2013 Capital One First Team Academic All-American® has seven total All-America claims in his career on the track (three in the 4x400 meter relay; two each in the 110 and 400 hurdles). He’s been all-conference 17 times and a scholar-athlete twice.
In addition, Hinckfoot holds the school record in the 400 hurdles (52.14) and was part of the program-record breaking 4x400 meter relay (3:13.26) at the 2013 NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships. Hinckfoot has been a GPAC titlist once each in the 4x4 and 110 and 400 hurdles.
Hinckfoot was instrumental in Concordia’s 2014 GPAC indoor and outdoor team championships – the first in school history.
Kortze stands out as one of the most accomplished runners in the history of Concordia athletics. The 2012-13 Lincoln Journal Star State College Female Athlete of the Year won a GPAC title in the 3,000 meters during the 2014 indoor season and was a national qualifier in the event. Kortze owns three career GPAC titles (3,000 meters once; 10,000 meters twice), 12 all-conference honors and one All-America claim on the track (10,000).
In cross country, she earned GPAC runner of the year in 2012, three all-conference awards and two All-America finishes (2011, 2012). In her three appearances at the national championships (2010-12), Kortze turned in finishes of 132nd, 13th and 14th, respectively. She’s a three-time scholar-athlete in both cross country and track and field. She was also named a 2013 Capital One First Team Academic All-American®.
Kortze helped the Bulldogs to 2010 indoor and 2012 outdoor conference championships.
