Men's Basketball Coaching Staff

Grant Schmidt - Head Coach

Grant Schmidt enters his 17th season as head coach of the Concordia men’s basketball program. During that time Schmidt has compiled a 358-181 (.664) record.

 The winningest coach in school history, he has guided the program to three Nebraska-Iowa Athletic Conference (NIAC) titles as well as 10 NAIA national tournaments, including a runner-up finish in 2004-05.

The 1983 Concordia graduate coached four years at Valley Lutheran High School in Phoenix, Ariz., and was an assistant for two years for the Bulldogs before coming head coach in the 1989-90 season.

Throughout his coaching career Schmidt has been honored numerous times. He has twice been named the Omaha World-Herald college coach of the year (1992, 2005). The Lincoln Journal Star bestowed the same honor on Schmidt in 1992, as did the NIAC.

Schmidt also serves as athletic director, for which he has been honored twice. In 2003 he was named the NAIA Region III and Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) athletic administrator of the year. He received the same honor from the GPAC in 2005.

During his playing days as a Bulldog he was named all-conference and all-NAIA District II. The team leader in scoring, Schmidt was team captain in 1982-83.

He and his wife, Deb (Aurich), also a Concordia graduate, have three children.




Anthony Elias - Assistant Coach

Anthony Elias, a native of San Jose, Calif., is in his second season as an assistant coach.

A former player for the Bulldogs, Elias has since served as the head coach at Mt. Pleasant High School.

In 2005-06 he as named the Blossom Valley Athletic League Coach of the Year, leading the squad to the 2006 league title.

He also was an assistant coach at Cuyamaca College.




Dan Sanborn - Assistant Coach

Dan Sanborn is in his first year as an assistant coach for the Bulldogs. Sanborn is no stranger to Concordia basketball, previously serving as student assistant.




Alex Michel - Student Assistant Coach

A former player, Alex Michel enters his first season as a student assistant for Concordia.

Michel will work primarily with the Bulldog junior varsity squad this season. A native of Billings, Mont., Michel is majoring in secondary education with an emphasis in physical education.
