What types of students study history?

A variety of students study history. Most have a natural love for the subject and are curious to learn more and to develop analytical thinking skills. The majority of history students are interested in teaching, secondary, middle, or elementary levels. Some want to go on to graduate study and pursue a career in higher education.

Many pre-seminary students major in history. The comprehensive nature of history as a field of study is an excellent preparation for seminary education. History also is a common major for pre-law students.

What types of history can I study at Concordia?

In terms of types of history a student can study here, we have a variety of upper-level courses in U.S. history, some of them focusing on a specific time period, such as U.S. history from 1920 to 1960, others developing a particular theme, for example religion and foreign relations, throughout the history of the U.S.. We offer several upper-level courses in European history and one in Latin American history. We have three religious (church) history courses, two in European religious history, one in U.S. history.

Can I get into graduate school, seminary or law school?

Our graduates in social sciences have had an excellent success in being admitted to graduate schools, seminary and law schools. Our geography program has placed many students at the University of Akron over the years. We have had numerous history majors go on to graduate school and seminary.

What types of internships, practicums or outside the classroom activities are available?

There are opportunities for sutdents to get practical experience. This also may include a trip to Europe for history or a trip to Hawaii for geography. Psychology courses offer a two-semester research opportunity for those who want experience before graduate school. Many local opportunities exist for business, social work, church work, city government, or political activism.

Can I find personal fulfillment in this field/in these fields?

Certainly. We believe God calls us to certain fields to serve our neighbor. However, God places us in various vocations throughout life. They can all be personally fulfilling even at times when they are quite challenging. While you are at Concordia professors assist you to find that place based on your interest.

What type of skills can I develop for life in general?

You will gain a greater appreciation for the world, its cultures and people through studying the social sciences. A history major will understand the background behind the conflicts in the Middle East. The geography major will know how to map a city for future growth. The social science teacher will be able to communicate these fields to her students. A businessperson will have the ability to research a subject and clearly write out a strategy for marketing a product.
